SASP Kentucky State Match

Ohio 1Text and photos by Brandon Ironmonger Rain and chilly temps could not keep 67 hardcore pistol shooters from slinging a lot of lead downrange at the Kentucky State SASP match on April 30th. Wisconsin's Union Grove Broncos, Indiana's Hoosier Daddy's Shooting Team, Ohio Steel Stingers, Eastern Kentucky University, and two of Tennessee's finest the Plateau Pistol Shooters and William Blount Shooting Team came to challenge the home team Bluegrass Sportsmen's League Steel Cats. Hoosier 3Thirty-eight shooters stayed around for the 2-stage rifle side match. The Hoosier Daddy's showed us they were a force to be reckoned by taking HOA Pistol and Rifle with Collin Campbell, High Lady Pistol by Sydnye Todd, 1st place in Varsity Centerfire and 3rd JV Rimfire. Union Grove took 1st JV Rimfire and 1st Open Rimfire. The Ohio Steel Stingers came to play with 2nd JV Rimfire, as well as 1st and 2nd Entry Rimfire. EKU barely edged out William Blount in the Collegiate CF. William Blount also placed 1st Open Centerfire and 1st Intermediate Rimfire. The Plateau Pistol Shooters took 2nd Open Rimfire. The host team BGSL Steel Cat's took the high team score of the day to secure a 1st place Open Rimfire with 217.70 and a High Lady in rifle by Hannah Ironmonger. Full scores for the match including the 2-stage rifle side match can be found at practiscore.com by searching for "Steel Cats." I want to thank all of the teams, coaches and parents for making the trip to our range.

Doug Koenig Brings Sportsman’s Team Challenge to Grand Island, Nebraska

stuHamburg, PA – Doug Koenig, Competition Director of the Sportsman’s Team Challenge announces online registration is now open. The Nationals match will be held at the Heartland Public Shooting Park in Alda, NE June 10-12, 2016 and will be open to the general public, industry and to all levels of shooting competitors.  “As a long-time participant of the Sportsman’s Team Challenge, I’m honored to be the Competition Director this year. The event continues to be a favorite of mine over the years especially when I’ve shot the match with my son.” Koenig added, “As this year’s Director, I look forward to continuing the Sportsman’s Team Challenge’s rich tradition of bringing shooting enthusiasts of all levels together for this fun-filled unique team competition.” The Sportsman’s Team Challenge is a two or three person team event, which combines multi-discipline shooting competition of rifle, pistol and shotgun. Designed to be competitor and spectator friendly with colorful reactive targets and countdown times visible to onlookers, the event introduces newcomers at regional matches throughout the country. The course of fire consists of six events, three of which involve colorful reactive steel targets that are engaged with .22 rimfire rifles, .22 rimfire pistols and centerfire pistols. These events are the Rifle, Pistol and Combo. Three shotgun events utilize aerial clay targets to round out the field of fire with the Flurry, Flush and Mixed Bag. The Flurry and Flush require teams to engage fifty targets in approximately one minute, while the Mixed Bag is similar to a five-stand course with the shooter not knowing from which of the trap machines a pair of clay targets will be released upon their call. Chris Dolnack, SVP & CMO at NSSF commented, “NSSF created the Sportsman’s Team Challenge as the first televised shooting competition. We’re excited that Doug and his friends are bringing back this classic event in a format that provides everyone, regardless of their skill level, with an opportunity to participate in a safe, fun and friendly format.” Dolnack noted, “It’s good for the local host community, good for the shooting community and good for the industry.” From its inception in the late 80’s, the Sportsman’s Team Challenge, now celebrating 29 years continues its popularity within the shooting sports drawing the interest of newcomers, families and competition shooters. Youth clay target competitions and teams in Indiana are experiencing dramatic growth. The Indiana Youth Shooting Sports Foundation (IYSSF.ORG) has been a large supporter of this movement. April 24th Howard County had 72 youth shooters from 9 youth teams arrived at the Isaac Walton League to compete in the Indiana Scholastic Clay Target Program’s (IN SCTP) Mid State Sporting Clays Championship. Additionally there were an estimated 150 parents and family members present also. 7200 competition targets were thrown as the youth competitors enjoyed the spirited competition. This event was the largest youth Sporting Clays event in Indiana EVER! When the scores were analyzed Reagen Harding won the High Overall Grand Champion with a score of 97 targets broken out of 100 thrown! The second place Grand Champion award went to Blake Sanford with a score of 96 targets broken out of 100 thrown. Blake didn’t seem disappointed as Reagen is his teammate. That’s correct the Target Busters, Coached by Jason Sanford, took the top two individual awards. Three public high schools were represented in the event. In the last three years since Attica Jr.-Sr. High School formed the states first public school shotgun team others are finding popularity for their high school students. Garrett High School and Fountain Central High School were the other public school teams in the competition. IYSSF continually promotes and supports youth shooting teams.  At this particular event, IYSSF handed out $5000 in team endowment awards for individual and team awards. These monies will be deposited into the winning team’s Midway USA Foundation accounts. IYSSF also defrayed the target costs of each participant by $10. The target payment came from a generous grant that IYSSF received from the Indiana Friends of NRA. IYSSF’s total support of this one event totaled $5720! The Friends of the NRA in Indiana holds banquets and fundraisers around the state to support youth shooting sports. They have donated over $550,000 so far in 2016. The IYSSF.ORG focused their grant application on reducing target costs for all IN SCTP kids that participate in the 2016 season. IYSSF.ORG president, Jim Dunn, provided the awards ceremony audience with a wonderful explanation of the origins of IYSSF and the Midway USA Foundation. There are many supporters in Indiana that want to see youth shooting sports continue to grow.
