SASP Athletes Train & Compete at the Olympic Training Center

Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes had the opportunity to train and compete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. From May 24-26, 2019 12 Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes learned to shoot the International disciplines of 10 Meter Air Pistol, Sport Pistol and Rapid-Fire Pistol. Athletes stayed at the Olympic Training Center and were trained by USA Shooting Coach Brent McPherson and former USA National Team Member and USA Shooting Board Member Jim Henderson. This was SASP’s first Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) in 5 years.

For action shooters the athletes picked up the Olympic disciplines quickly. Before they left the Olympic Training Center 8 of 12 athletes shot 10M Air Pistol scores that would have qualified them last year to be invited to the Junior Olympic Trials for a chance to make the United States Junior Olympic Team. Coach Jim Henderson stated, “In all my years of coaching I have never seen a group of athletes pick this up so quickly, and then perform at this high of a level.”

Congratulation to the following SASP athletes who applied and were selected to attend the SASP 2019 JODC.

We also had SASP coaches and SASP staff participate in an international discipline coach’s clinic on May 22 and 23 before helping coach the SASP athletes upon their arrival. Russell Gilkison VA, Samantha Engle MI were the coaches that participated in the coach program.

SASP is excited to watch as these athletes continue to participate in the International disciplines with hopes of one day seeing one of them standing on the podium and the American Flag is raised as they represent our county in international competition.

We look forward to again holding a JODC in 2020.

Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation 2020 Scholarship Program

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), is once again offering our scholarship program to reward deserving, graduating seniors in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) with needed college assistance. The main objective is to award as many scholarships as possible to qualifying SCTP / SASP graduating seniors.

Since 2013, the SSSF has awarded over $450,000 in scholarship funds benefiting over 450 student athletes, from nearly all 50 states in the Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting programs. We are pleased to announce that last year’s Scholarship Program awarded over $100,000 to qualifying applicants.

The SSSF is establishing minimal guidelines for the selection procedure, thus allowing the final selection to be as simple as possible.

*NOTE – You must be a current and paid member of the SCTP or SASP national organization at the time of application submission! See details on how to complete your team registration here.

General Procedures: Each applicant must be a graduating senior within the year of the awarded scholarship and must be registered for college before the scholarship is awarded in that same year.• Applicant must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average through the most recent grading period ending on or before April 1, 2020.

• Each prospective recipient must be registered as a full-time college student before the scholarship is awarded and must provide the name of the post-secondary college or community/ junior college to receive the scholarship proceeds. Each scholarship check will be mailed to the appropriate college in the student’s name by October 1, 2020. The scholarship funds are to be used for tuition. This is a one-time, non-renewable scholarship.

• Applicants may not be in receipt of any “full” scholarship funds in order to qualify (i.e., athletics, military academy, academic, etc.).

• Applicants must have participated during 2019-2020 in one of their SCTP / SASP State Championships, National Championships, or regional events in Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Olympic Bunker, Olympic Skeet Championships; Pistol or Rifle.

• Applicants must be able to complete all parts of the application packet:

Who Will Take Top Gun Honors in 2018?

The Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Action Shooting Program are excited to announce a new event at this year’s National Championships - the Top Gun Challenge. Over the years we have watched the increase in athletes shooting multiple disciplines in both our programs at nationals. We wanted to find a way to recognize the commitment and stamina these athletes have shown competing in so many events, over the course of the week of nationals. CZ-USA, a large sponsor of both SCTP and SASP heard us talking about wanting to start some kind of “Top Gun” competition and graciously offered to sponsor the top prize for the winner. CZ-USA will be donating a Shotgun, a Rifle and Pistol to SCTP/SASP and we will be awarding all three prizes to the High Overall Top Gun Challenge competitor. With CZ’s support here is what we have come up with for the 2018 SCTP/SASP Nationals. Top Gun Challenge Eligibility Criteria, Scoring and Prizes

Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be current team members in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) AND the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).
Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be pre-registered to shoot the following events at the 2018 National Championships:
- 16 Yard Trap
- Skeet
- Sporting Clays
- Rimifre Rifle (irons or optics)
- Centerfire or Rimfire Pistol
Each athlete wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must complete a registration form in person at either the SASP or SCTP registration desk located at the Cardinal Center Central Entry Building prior to competing in their first event. Athletes will then shoot all competition events as usual.
We will compile scores from your events and calculate the winners. Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays is easy you will get the total number of birds you break in each discipline, so a possible 600 points. Since SASP is based on time and not total targets hit, it will be done a little differently. We will take all participants and rank both their rifle times and their pistol times fastest to slowest.
- The fastest in each discipline will get 200, second place 199, third place 198 and so on down the line until everyone has a score. We will add all those points together and the athlete with the most points out of the possible 1000 will win.
Every Athlete who competes in all the events and signs up, will receive a Top Gun Challenge challenge coin just for participating and showing your shooting stamina.

Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation is proud to announce the 2018 recipients in its Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Scholarship Program. One hundred thirty three student athletes from 25 different states will receive scholarships totaling $83,300. From 2013 to date, SSSF has awarded nearly $400,000 in scholarship funds benefiting over 400 student athletes in the Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting programs. Athletes who are graduating from high school in 2018 and will enroll in college this year were eligible to apply for this year’s scholarships. Awards are based on SCTP/SASP participation, academics, need, essays and other factors. The scholarships are being funded by generous shooting industry sponsors, as well as supporters and donors who provide the SCTP with funds through national fundraising banquets. 2018 SASP College Nationals

How did you spend your spring break? Well 112 college athletes spent theirs competing for SASP National Titles in Alabama. On March 10 & 11 the Scholastic Action Shooting Program held our College National Championships at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Talladega Marksmanship Park in Talladega, AL. We thank GLOCK for sponsoring our use of the Marksmanship Park and CMP for their great southern hospitality. This year was the largest championship in SASP’s history, with 16 teams, 112 athletes and 201 entries. That is a 100% increase in teams, 44% increase in athletes and 121% increase in entries over the 2017 championships. Congratulations to all the teams that participated with many competing in their very first national championships. This year the results were very close with many places being decided by just a few seconds and some by less than a second. In the Rimfire Discipline the University of Vermont took first, followed by Michigan State University in second and Texas A&M finishing third. In Centerfire Texas A&M repeated as National Champions and also took second, with West Point coming in third. In Optic Rifle the University of Vermont took first and third with Florida State University finishing second. In Iron Rifle University of Arizona won the championship by less than 5 seconds at their first nationals with Florida State University taking second and Clemson University taking third. In the 1911 discipline Michigan State University won the national championship, with Florida State taking second and Miami University of Ohio taking third in their first trip to the national championship. In the Open Division, Rimfire Bethel University won the National Championship by beating second place Clemson University by just 1.66 seconds, with Bob Jones University finishing third. In Centerfire Lake Country Action Shooters and Bob Jones University shared the title with Texas A&M taking second and the University of Florida taking third. In Optic rifle Concordia University Wisconsin competing in their first SASP took the championship beating second place University of Wisconsin Platteville by just .98 of a second, and Lake Country Action Shooters came in third. Iron Rifle the University of Wisconsin Platteville took the title beating their in-state rival Concordia University of Wisconsin who took second, with Bethel University taking third. In 1911 Lake Country Action Shooters took first and Concordia University of Wisconsin took second. View the complete results here. Volunteers Needed at College Nationals

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is expecting a record turnout at the 2018 College National Championships at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama. The match is scheduled for March 10-11, 2018 and we need your help!

We are looking for half day commitments to serve the roles of Safety Officers (SO) and scorekeepers. Working a match is a great way to learn more about the Scholastic Action Shooting Program! Also, for each half day worked you will be eligible for a random drawing for some great prizes! If you have never worked on an action shooting range before, please view our YouTube video outlining the safety rules, standardized range commands and responsibilities and our video on using Practiscore for SASP data entry. Additional training will be provided on-site for those new to action shooting. Volunteers must be at least 18 to work as safety officers. Ruger Donates P90 Manual Safety Pistol to Benefit Scholastic Action Shooting Program

Ruger Firearms has generously donated a blued manual safety model, .45 ACP, P90™ pistol to benefit the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).

The pistol is being auctioned on Gunbroker.com now through February 28, 12:30PM eastern time. Ruger® first introduced the blued manual safety model, .45 ACP, P90™ pistol in 1998. The serial number of this P90™ is 661-84178 and the testfire date is January 13, 1999. This pistol has never been fired beyond normal testing during manufacture. The manual safety model P90™ is made of hard-coated A356T6 aircraft quality aluminum alloy, chrome-molybdenum steel, and 6123 Xenoy resin grip panels. It features manual ambidextrous safety levers; a 4-1/2 inch barrel and high-visibility white-dot inserts on both the front and rear sights. The square notch rear sight is drift-adjustable for windage. Other features include an oversized trigger guard and full-time ambidextrous magazine latch. The P90™ Pistol will be shipped in a gray plastic lockable case along with two 7-shot magazines, magazine loading tool, original instruction manual and original marketing materials. The pistol is being sold “as is,” and the purchaser assumes all liability for its safe and proper ownership, storage, use, and resale. Interested in Coach Training?

Do you have a need for coach certification in your area? If so, please let us know! Several of our SCTP and SASP staff are members of the NRA National Coach Development Staff and can travel to your location to conduct coach certification courses.

NRA Coach Development Schools are the heart of the NRA Coach Education Program. The instructors use up-to-date materials and multimedia presentations to present discipline-specific coach courses. The registration fee includes a copy of the discipline-specific coach school student study guide and other materials to help you with the details of coaching. Upon successful completion of the coach school you will be a Coach (Level 1) (or Youth Trainer if under 18 years old) in that discipline. Once approved, coaches may print their coach certificate and wallet card for their use. What Is Taught In The School? The Level 1 coach school is two days of sports-specific lessons and practical coaching exercises designed to teach the coach candidate the basics of coaching beginning and intermediate shooters.
