The Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) reached a new milestone recently with the Tennessee State match, setting an attendance record for state matches. The match was a combined effort of the McKenzie (TN) Shooting team and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation (TWRF), which is the SPP State Advisor. A record-setting 119 athletes participated in the match held at the Carroll County Shooting Park (CCSP) throughout the weekend of May 2. In Junior Rimfire, the DC Steel Shooters won the 1st place title, with William Blount Squad 7 coming in 2nd. The Plateau Pistol Shooters Squad 4 took home 3rd. In Junior Centerfire, the Arnold Junior Shooters Squad White took home the Gold medal, and the McKenzie Cobras and McKenzie Cazadores took Silver and Bronze, respectively. The Senior Rimfire Division saw the McKenzie Crushers coming in 1st, the Plateau Pistol Shooters 2nd, and the Arlington Squad 2, 3rd. In Senior Centerfire, Arlington Squad 1 won the Gold, and the William Blount team won the Silver medal. Among College Division teams, Bethel University won the Gold. In addition to the SPP state match, many of the shooters also shot the Rimfire Rifle Side Match. Taking the top 3 slots in the side match were Hunter Webb, Ty Stone, and Ethan Rogan. The coaches, assistant coaches, and adult volunteers also joined in the rifle fun, with Michael Webb and Jason Pinson having the fastest times. The Carroll County Shooting Park, which is home to the McKenzie Shooting Sports team, will also host the SPP Fall Regional Match on October 23-24. “CCSP is a great example for ranges and teams across the county,” said Scott Moore, SPP National Director. “The park was a joint effort between county and state agencies and the people of McKenzie and Huntingdon, Tennessee. It has become a showplace for SPP events. We are fortunate to have such a great venue as part of SPP.”

Scholastic Pistol Program, along with NRA and USA Shooting, will offer a Level 1 Pistol Coach School on November 1-2 in Tucson, Arizona at the Pima Pistol Club. The coach school is the heart of the coach education program. The Level 1 pistol coach’s course through the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting, and the Scholastic Pistol Program covers all required coaching fundamentals for pistol coaches in the SPP, in addition to other disciplines of pistol competition. The training is provided by the SPP/NRA/USAS National Coach Development Staff (NCDS). The instructors use up-to-date materials and PowerPoint presentations to present the discipline-specific coach course. The course duration is 2 days with class running from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Candidates should bring eye and ear protection and note-taking materials with them. Firearms will be provided, and the Boy Scout Council will provide the ammunition. Cost of the course is $140, which includes all printed materials, 3-year coaching credentials with the NRA, a binder for your materials, and lunch/refreshments each day. The registration fee includes a copy of the coach student study guide and other materials to help you with the details of coaching. Participants complete an open-book test as homework during the first evening of the course. The test is graded in class, reviewed for understanding, and then submitted to the NRA National Coach Trainer by the school instructor for credential processing. Upon successful completion of the coach school, you will be a Level 1 Coach (or Youth Trainer, if under 18 years old) in that discipline. Pre-registration for the course is required. Seven SPP athletes and four coaches participated in Scholastic Pistol Program's first-ever Junior Olympic Development Camp last week, July 2-6, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Shooters and coaches came from teams in Michigan, Arizona, Illinois, and Florida.
SPP is the official feeder program to USA Shooting's Sport Pistol and Rapid Fire Pistol programs. Those in attendance were able to spend time in the classroom and on the range with our coach, Russ Doucette, and Olympic athletes Teresa (Meyer) Chambers, Keith Sanderson, and Kerry Morris.
"We appreciate the help and support of the OTC staff and athletes who provided us with help and support throughout the camp," said Tammy Mowry, SPP Program Manager. "We're excited that our athletes and coaches were able to learn more about USA Shooting's pistol disciplines. This was an outstanding event, and we're already looking forward to the next one."
