The 2019 Scholastic Action Shooting Program 2019 National Championships became the Largest Action Shooting Match in History

65 SASP teams from over 20 states from as far away as Washington State traveled with their Youth Athletes, Coaches, Volunteers, and Parents all came together at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio for what proved to be a “Record Breaking” 2019 SASP National Championship.

 With over 1,650 entries, this years SASP National Championship surpassed Glock Shooting Sports Foundation to become the largest Action Shooting Match in history. SASP founding sponsors Glock, Ruger, CZ USA, and Action Target were all in attendance to be a part of this historic milestone. Over 250,000 shots were fired at the 2019 National Championship competitions.
 
Congratulations to all our 2019 SASP National Championship Individual and team winners. Many teams came to the Cardinal Center to defend their previous titles and left holding the “top spots” again for 2019. Still, many of this year’s individual and team winners were on the podium for the first time. It was easy to see that all our SASP teams had worked hard all year to get ready for the intense competition that is always a part of the SASP National Championships.
 

Our thanks to all our safety officer volunteers who put in over 1000 combined hours in the 90 plus degree heat and humidity. And our thanks to the staff at the Cardinal Center for their support.
 
For everyone involved it was an amazing week and it’s time to start planning for our next record setting National Championship event, July 11-18, 2020!

Eldridge, Iowa’s SCTP North Scott Trap Team Looking for More 1st Place Finishes

The North Scott Trap Team are heading to the 2019 SCTP National Championships in Marengo, Ohio focused on adding to their 2018 accomplishments. Last year, at the 2018 SCTP National Championships, North Scott Trap Team finished first in Handicap Trap Doubles for the 3rd year in a row, First in Trap Singles High School, First in High Overall, and First Place in Skeet for the 2nd year in a row.

North Scott Senior Varsity Red squad members Andrew Troje, Hunter Frerichs, Jaydon Biles, Hunter Block, and Thomas Keeshan leave the field after a round of trap singles. The squad fired a 496x500 in the first half of the 1,000 target squad event on July 19.

Eleven (11) athletes, their parents and coaches have made the trip and are excited to get started. The North Scott team has 65 athletes in the program, ranging from 6th grade to College.

North Scott Head Coach Eric Long talked about his team’s chances for 2019. "This year our theme has been “a perfect effort” each time we take the line.  We understand that in a sport of perfection we will not always be perfect, but we do give a perfect effort every time and that is what has driven this group of athletes to succeed at the national level. I am proud and honored to be part of this program and to be able to watch these athletes move through our program and to wherever their next chapter takes them after high school.”

The North Scott Trap Team is very active in the community, participating in many civic events throughout the year. In addition, the team has an active fundraising effort to make sure the resources are there for regional, state and of course the National Championship trips.

Look for the North Scott Trap Team’s athletes at the top of the leaser board again this year!

Custer, Washington Scholastic Action Shooting Sports “Team Gotta” Heads to the 2019 SASP National Championships to Defend Multiple Titles

Twelve (12) Youth Athletes from Custer, Washington based SASP Team Gotta are heading to the 2019 SASP National Championships in Marengo, Ohio this week to defend a host of titles earned at the 2018 SASP National Championships.

In 2018 Team Gotta won 1st Place in Rimfire Pistol, 1911 Pistol and Open Optic Rifle. Team Gotta, the SASP that travels each year across the country to attend the National Championships hold multiple events throughout the year to cover the cost of travel for the team athletes and coaches. Team Gotta Head Coach, Jim Coffey proudly stated, “last year and again this year our team athletes did not have to pay a dime to travel to Nationals”. The entire teams’ efforts throughout the year along with a grant from the Midway Foundation made all that possible.”

 
In addition to competing in numerous SASP events, Team Gotta youth athlete Naomi McKay, who finished 2018 as the Rimfire Pistol Senior Lady High Overall sang the National Anthem at the 2019 National Championships opening ceremonies on Wednesday, July 17, 2019.

Sparta, Georgia’s Lake Oconee Shotgun Team Looking to Stay on Top at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) 2019 National Championships!

Twenty seven (27) Youth Athletes from the Sparta, Georgia Lake Oconee Shotgun Team are here at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio with one goal in mind! Equal or better that 2018 performance at the SCTP National Championships at the 2019 SCTP National Championships. In 2018, Team Oconee was the HOA Team for all three shotgun disciplines, trap, skeet, and sporting clays. In addition, Lake Oconee finished 4th overall in trap.

Steve Lane, Head Coach of the Lake Oconee Shotgun Team says, “our team worked very hard this season to prepare for the National Championships. Most of our athletes have returned from last year so we are heading into the Cardinal Center ready to perform at our best”.

In addition to the 27 athletes, Lake Oconee Shotgun Team has almost all the parents and even a few grandparents make the trip to support their youth athletes.

The Lake Oconee Shotgun Team has athletes from 5th grade through seniors in high school. Three of the team’s seniors are graduating this year, two of those graduating seniors will be members of the  Emanuel College Shotgun Team following graduation.

SCTP and SASP National Championships will Remain at The Cardinal Shooting Center Through 2029

On Friday, May 31, 2019 Ben Berka, Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation President and Executive Director announced that SSSF has entered into an agreement with the Cardinal Shooting Center to host their July Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Action Shooting Program National Championships through the year 2029.

The Cardinal Shooting Center, one of this country’s largest features 52 Trap Houses, 14 Skeet Fields, 2 Sporting Clays Courses an International Bunker Trap and a 5 Stand! They also have 14 Pistol & Rifle Bays, as well as an Archery Practice Range and 3D Archery course for the Pistol, Rifle and bow enthusiasts alike! For 2019, the Cardinal Shooting Center will have completed their state-of-the-art “Shot Curtain System’, providing a common background for all trap shooters as well as an efficient platform to reclaim lead shot.

Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Director stated “Everyone involved with SCTP is excited about our new 10-year contract with The Cardinal Shooting Center. Beginning in 2020, the Cardinal Shooting Center will add 6-8 additional skeet fields as well as the possibility for additional American Trap and Bunker Trap facilities in the future. We couldn’t be happier to have agreed upon a long-term deal with Cardinal knowing they welcome our athletes, teams and families with open arms each and every year!”

In addition to the SCTP and SASP National Championships in July, the Cardinal Shooting Center is also home for The SCTP College National Championships, SCTP Spring Regional and the SASP Fall Regional Competition. The Cardinal Center also plays host to some of the country’s largest open shooting events including Karen’s Cup, the Ohio state shoot, the Buckeye Open, Cardinal Classic and the “Red Bird” Sporting Classic!

Luke Spengler, Trap manager and tournament director at the Cardinal Shooting Center made the following statement following the completion of the new 10-year agreement. “We are extremely excited to know our youth athletes will be at the Cardinal Shooting Center competing on a national level through 2029. 2018 National Championships July 14-21 @ Ohio Cardinal Center

The 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships is scheduled for July 14-21st, 2018 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. We hope you can join us! Download the complete event program here Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) registration will open in the SHOT system on May 15th. Scholastic Clay Target Program pre-registration will begin May 15th with general registration through the SHOT system open June 1st. New for 2018! Scholastic Clay Target Program High Over All Trap Event SCTP will offer another High Over All (HOA) for teams that will include all of the “Trap” disciplines! Teams bringing athletes and competing in all 3 Trap disciplines of 16 yard Trap, Handicap Trap and Trap Doubles will have the opportunity for their team to earn a place among the top teams for a separate HOA! This “Trap HOA” will be based on a team’s top 5 athletes in 16 yard trap, top 5 athletes in Handicap Trap and top 5 athletes in Trap Doubles. That total score will be used for the teams “Trap HOA”! International Championships Registration Open June 15

The SCTP, in conjunction with USA Shooting, is hosting the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s International Style National Championships on July 22-27, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Registration by SCTP team coaches opens on Friday, June 15 in the SHOT System. Here is the event schedule for the competition: Sunday July 22nd – Open Training for Bunker and Skeet Monday July 23rd – Open Training for Bunker and Skeet Tuesday July 24th – I-Skeet Competition 75 Targets Wednesday July 25th – I-Skeet Competition 50 Targets & Finals (followed by awards) Thursday July 26th – Bunker Trap 75 Targets Friday July 27th – Bunker Trap 50 Targets & Finals (followed by awards) Coaches: The competition registration will open on June 15th for this tournament. You will need to squad your athletes prior to Thursday, July 19th so that they can be placed on random shooting squads for the competition. Walk on’s will generally not be allowed unless there is room available. Top 3 placing athletes in Men’s and Ladies Bunker Trap as well as top 3 placing athletes in International Skeet (12 total athletes) will earn a spot on the 2019 SCTP National Team. Athletes must meet a minimum qualifying score (MQS) of a 90 x 125 or better in the qualification rounds, regardless of finals placing, in order to be eligible for a National Team spot. If all athletes in the final have achieved the MQS, then finals placement will determine the top 3 athletes. However, if there are athletes in a discipline final who have not attained the MQS, those athletes will not be eligible for the National Team, regardless of finals placement. At their discretion, The Head Coach and National Director will then fill any open Team slots with eligible athletes. Due to USA Shooting’s scheduling of the Fall Selection match immediately following the SCTP Nationals, we will not host an awards banquet following this year’s International Nationals to allow athletes time for travel to the Fall Selection. We will award all medals/trophies at the range following the events. Hope to see you all in Colorado Springs in July!! Pre-Squadding Information for 2018 SCTP National Championships

Due to the extremely large volume of teams and coaches trying to squad for the 2018  National Championships, we have decided to implement a new registration path this year to take some pressure off coaches competing for slots and shooting times when general online registration is open and available on June 1st. This year, we are trying something new. We are going to allow teams to “pre-squad” for the SCTP National Championships. Here’s how it will work: Teams must send via US Postal Service to the Burlington, WI address provided, a filled out “Nationals pre-squad form” available on our Forms and Handbook section of our website. You will need to fill out a form for each team “scenario”……meaning, the dates and times for each squad you want entered. These squads must be “pre-built” in your team’s page and be built for each discipline. Date for SCTP to receive these forms is Tuesday, May 15. Do not send prior to that date, entries received with a prior date stamp will not be accepted!! This form must be sent in with payment either by credit card or by check, no payment sent in with forms will result in no squads entered for that team. These funds are “nonrefundable”!! If you pay for 15 athletes and only 12 show up, the other 3 athlete’s fees are not returned. A team may change shooters or resquad them before nationals, that is no problem. We will take the presquad forms in the order they are received by us from the US Postal service and in order of the time stamp on the envelope. No dropping off of forms will be allowed and PLEASE, do NOT send these forms with a signature required. They will be put at the end of the forms received that day or the next day if they are sent with a signature required…… Squading will be confirmed and posted prior to the opening of the National Championship squading on June 1st. Please give us 3 options or “scenarios” for your teams squads as many slots will fill up fast. See the form and instructions for more details regarding squading for the SCTP National Championships! 2018 SCTP All-State Teams To Be Named at Nationals

New from the 2017 shooting season and continued for the 2018 season will be the SCTP “All State Team”. This team will be comprised of athletes finishing in the top 5 positions at their respective state shoots in 16 yard singles Trap, American Skeet and Sporting Clays, male and female athletes combined and regardless of their team affiliation! To be eligible for the All State Team, athletes must:
  1. Attend their SCTP state championship event(s)
  2. Attend the SCTP National Championships in Marengo, OH
Those top 5 athletes (in each discipline from their state shoot) attending the SCTP National Championships being held in Marengo, Ohio July 14-21 2018 will have their scores count towards their “All State Team” score for that discipline! They will not shoot independently of their team and squad however, we will just use the scores shot at nationals for their “All State Team” score. Any ties will be shot off as a squad! The top 5 athletes will be selected across all age divisions and categories in grades 12 and under only. Special prizes will be issued for the top 3 states (athletes) by order of finish and will be presented at the awards ceremonies at the tournament. These will all be 5 person squads. If an athlete that finishes in the top 5 (at their state shoot) does not attend the national championships, we will then take the next competitor in line that will be attending nationals in July! That could be a 6th place state finisher, 7th place or so on down the line. We will have more criteria posted on our website soon in the  SCTP Forms and Handbook section.
