The 2019 Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships Adds New Names, Accomplishments and Credentials to the Record Books

If you were anywhere near central Ohio last week, it was easy to see and feel that something “special” was taking place. The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) was in full force from July 13th thru July 20th at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio

The SCTP Program had its largest event on record with over 6,300 entries in Skeet, Skeet Doubles, Trap, Trap Doubles, Handicap Trap, Sporting Clays, and Bunker Trap. 2,343 athletes, coaches’ volunteers, and family’s from 240 teams and 30 states showed up to be part of the almost 2 Million targets that were thrown for competition, practice and side games…...the most in SCTP history!

Grace Marlen became only the second female athlete in SCTP history to shoot 200 straight at Nationals (Reanna Frauens did it in 2018) in addition to winning the $7,600 Browning College Scholarship!

AND…, the sweltering heat and humidity contributed to another unique National Championship title, the largest number of bottles of water ever consumed at an SCTP National Championship event.

Of course, Congratulations to all our 2019 National Championship Individual and Team winners. Many teams came to the Cardinal Center to defend their previous year titles and left holding the “top spots” again for 2019. Still, many of this year’s individual and team winners were on the podium for the first time. It was easy to see that all our SCTP teams had worked hard all year to get ready for the intense competition that is always a part of their National Championships.

The Cardinal Center and staff were fantastic again this year and for everyone involved it was an amazing week! It’s now time to start planning for our next record setting National Championship event, July 11-18, 2020!

More Ways to Compete and Win Than Ever at the 2019 SCTP National Championships

SCTP Teams from across the United States (29 states to be exact) are planning, packing, practicing, and getting ready to head with their families, teammates, and friends to the 2019 SCTP National Championships being held at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, July 13-20, 2019.

“We may reach that 2 million target mark!” Said SCTP National Director, Tom Wondrash. “That’s 11-12 Semi loads of Clay Targets thrown in just this week! This will be the largest National Championship in the history of the SCTP and I’m sure White Flyer (manufacturer of the clay targets and founding sponsor) is quite pleased to see this!”

Teams will be competing in Trap, Skeet, Skeet Doubles Sporting Clays, Double Trap, Handicap Trap and Bunker Trap. Most would think that would be enough however for 2019, SCTP has added several additional competitions for SCTP Teams to participate in including…

Make A Break Competition – Athletes have a chance to win a case of ammo each day by competing in the ever popular Make A Break! Winners will be awarded daily and the finalists will compete head to head on Saturday, July 20 where the grand Prize winner will receive a Fabarm XLR 5 Velocity 12ga.

Skeet Doubles Competition – Athletes that compete in Friday, July 19th’s event of Skeet Doubles at the SCTP Nationals, will have the opportunity to have their number drawn to compete Saturday for a final round of Skeet Doubles and have the chance to win the Beretta A400 Action KO shotgun being donated by Beretta for this event! At the end of competition on Friday, several numbers will be posted and those athletes whose scores end in that number will be eligible to shoot another round of Skeet Doubles where the highest shooter will win the Beretta Shotgun!

Last Competitor Standing- All athletes are eligible to compete in the Last Competitor Standing events being held Wednesday evening after opening ceremonies as well as Friday evening after awards ceremonies for Handicap Trap, Trap Doubles and Bunker Trap. Wrist bands to compete are only $5 and athletes will have a chance to win firearms from our partners at Legacy Sports and SKB Shotguns! A total of 6 guns to be given away along with many other great prizes including about 60 cases of ammo, shooting glasses compliments of RE Ranger, leather shooting bags from Shamrock Leather and much more!

In addition, SCTP youth athletes, families and friends can enter the 2019 SCTP National Raffle where over $30,000.00 in prizes will be won including a Kolar Max O/U Shotgun and 6 additional guns. And like last year, individuals or teams can participate in the Flurry Shoot where prizes will be awarded every day.

Pre-Registration for SCTP nationals begins May 15th, 2019

Like last year, due to the extremely large volume of teams and coaches trying to squad for the National Championships,  we will again be allowing teams to “pre-squad” for the 2019 SCTP National Championships at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio.

Here’s how it will work:
1. Send a check for the proper amount of all squads and athletes to the Burlington WI address post marked no earlier than 12:01am on May 15th and no later than midnight on May 22nd.

2. Money received is “Non-Refundable”. Pre-registration fees will not be returned for any athletes that do not attend the SCTP National Championships.

3. All squads must be “pre-built” on your team’s home page for the National Championships. Teams will be allowed to change athletes as they see fit later but all squads must be ready to populate the shooting schedule.

4. SCTP will populate the squad assignments based on the time and date received (time stamp) on the envelope containing your paperwork and check. PLEASE send by regular mail with NO signature required. Sending paperwork requiring a signature may delay your paperwork!

5. Download and complete the pre-registration form (also available on the SSSF website) that provides your information along with dates and times you would like your squads assigned. Please give us 3 options for times and days.

6. Teams will be notified of their pre-registration by May 29 and before normal registration which opens on June 1st.

Note:
Completed form(s) must be sent in with payment either by credit card or by check, no payment sent in with forms will result in no squads entered for that team. These payments are “nonrefundable”!! If you pay for 15 athletes and only 12 show up, the other 3 athlete’s fees are not returned.

Completed forms and payments must be mailed to us no sooner than May 15, 2019 and sent to:

What’s Happening at Nationals

The 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) national championships kicked off last Saturday, July 14 and concludes on Saturday, July 21. The event is being hosted by the Cardinal Shooting Center located near Marengo, OH. A total of 275 teams from 26 states are participating - some as close as Ohio and as far as Washington. Over 2,700 athletes are scheduled to participate with over 1.25 million competition shots expected to be fired over 8 days. Athletes from around the country are participating in trap, doubles trap, handicap trap, skeet, doubles skeet, sporting clays, bunker trap, action pistol and action rifle events. Many athletes shoot multiple events translating to almost 7,000 total event entries for the eight day competition. In addition to the main competition events there are many popular side events including the "Last Competitor Standing" shotgun competition and the "Beat the Pro" pistol side match. When not shooting, athletes and their families have been spending time with the dozens of vendors on the Cardinal Center grounds and visiting special guests such as Larry and Brenda Potterfield, owners of MidwayUSA and founders of the MidwayUSA Foundation. The Potterfield's have donated over $100 million to youth shooting sports organizations and teams across the country! Because of generous grants made possible by the Potterfield's, the SSSF has been able to contribute nearly $8 million to SCTP and SASP Team Endowment accounts held at the MidwayUSA Foundation. Larry and Brenda enjoyed a day on the grounds featuring a team meet and greet, rifle shooting and trapshooting with youth athletes. Additionally, pro shooter clinics have been conducted for all coaches and athletes to learn. Clinics have featured Dave Miller, Matt Hopkins, Max Michel, Lena Miculek and Ashley Rheuark. Competition results can be found by following these links: Stay tuned to our blog and social media for complete coverage of events from the rest of the week! 2018 SCTP All-State Teams To Be Named at Nationals

New from the 2017 shooting season and continued for the 2018 season will be the SCTP “All State Team”. This team will be comprised of athletes finishing in the top 5 positions at their respective state shoots in 16 yard singles Trap, American Skeet and Sporting Clays, male and female athletes combined and regardless of their team affiliation! To be eligible for the All State Team, athletes must:
  1. Attend their SCTP state championship event(s)
  2. Attend the SCTP National Championships in Marengo, OH
Those top 5 athletes (in each discipline from their state shoot) attending the SCTP National Championships being held in Marengo, Ohio July 14-21 2018 will have their scores count towards their “All State Team” score for that discipline! They will not shoot independently of their team and squad however, we will just use the scores shot at nationals for their “All State Team” score. Any ties will be shot off as a squad! The top 5 athletes will be selected across all age divisions and categories in grades 12 and under only. Special prizes will be issued for the top 3 states (athletes) by order of finish and will be presented at the awards ceremonies at the tournament. These will all be 5 person squads. If an athlete that finishes in the top 5 (at their state shoot) does not attend the national championships, we will then take the next competitor in line that will be attending nationals in July! That could be a 6th place state finisher, 7th place or so on down the line. We will have more criteria posted on our website soon in the  SCTP Forms and Handbook section. If you have any other questions about this great opportunity for our athlete’s, please contact the Directors of Development, Chet Tuinstra or Carlton Nether or contact National Director, Tom Wondrash.
