Coaches, your team has a great opportunity to start the new season out with a regional shoot in Tennessee.  The SASP will be holding its SE Regional on Saturday October 1, 2016, in Huntingdon, Tenn., at the Carroll County Shooting Sports Park.  Then stick around after the shoot for the SASP Tennessee Fundraising Banquet at 6 p.m., catered by Mallard’s Restaurant. Registration for the shoot will be available on the SHOT system.  For Banquet information, contact Rick Leach at rleach@sssfonline.com. Tickets for the banquet are $35 and a portion of the ticket sale are given to the team selling the tickets.

The event drew 2,369 competitors from 34 states to participate in trap, skeet and sporting clays through SCTP, and action rifle and action pistol events through SASP.

Ankeny, IA - Fourteen coaches from five different Iowa Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) teams attended a unique training opportunity with world champion action shooting competitor and coach, Manny Bragg (www.mannybragg.com). The course was hosted by the Dragoon Chapter Izaak Walton League and Central Iowa Scholastic Shooters and sponsored by the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program, Inc. Coaches spent two days on July 26-27 learning the fundamentals of shooting accurately at speed, and more importantly, how to coach those fundamentals to SASP athletes shooting rifles and handguns. Coaches spent the first day in a blend of classroom and range time reviewing fundamental shooting skills such as grip, presentation to the first target, accuracy, trigger control, transitions and the mental game. Day two was spent role-playing, diagnosing and troubleshooting common errors action shooters encounter and practicing useful drills and coaching techniques to develop the proper skill sets. “This is just one more step in creating a great experience for our youth and the shooting sports” said Brian Hood, head coach for the Central Iowa Scholastic Shooters and board member of Iowa SCTP, Inc. “As coaches we have the responsibility to first promote and train firearms safety, secondly sportsmanship and the desire to compete.  With the new knowledge and skills provided by Manny we can better help our athletes excel with proper coaching.”

Congratulations to all the athletes, parents, and families that traveled to the Cardinal Center for the SASP National Championships last month.  We had a fantastic time seeing everyone.  Many thanks to all of our Safety Officers. Without you we wouldn’t have had a great match. This year with the addition of the rifle discipline, the SASP National Championships grew to 542 entries, up from last year’s number of 356. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal recently published an article congratulating members of the Wisconsin youth shooting teams for their outstanding performance at the SCTP and SASP National Championships. The article, written by Paul Smith, Milwaukee Journal Sentinal outdoors editor, states the performance of Wisconsin squads and individuals cemented the state's standing as a national leader among youth shooting sports. Ben Berka, president of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, was quoted as saying, "Wisconsin has established a pedigree, a tradition.
