2018 SCTP All-State Teams To Be Named at Nationals

New from the 2017 shooting season and continued for the 2018 season will be the SCTP “All State Team”. This team will be comprised of athletes finishing in the top 5 positions at their respective state shoots in 16 yard singles Trap, American Skeet and Sporting Clays, male and female athletes combined and regardless of their team affiliation! To be eligible for the All State Team, athletes must:
  1. Attend their SCTP state championship event(s)
  2. Attend the SCTP National Championships in Marengo, OH
Those top 5 athletes (in each discipline from their state shoot) attending the SCTP National Championships being held in Marengo, Ohio July 14-21 2018 will have their scores count towards their “All State Team” score for that discipline! They will not shoot independently of their team and squad however, we will just use the scores shot at nationals for their “All State Team” score. Any ties will be shot off as a squad! The top 5 athletes will be selected across all age divisions and categories in grades 12 and under only. Special prizes will be issued for the top 3 states (athletes) by order of finish and will be presented at the awards ceremonies at the tournament. These will all be 5 person squads. If an athlete that finishes in the top 5 (at their state shoot) does not attend the national championships, we will then take the next competitor in line that will be attending nationals in July! That could be a 6th place state finisher, 7th place or so on down the line. We will have more criteria posted on our website soon in the  SCTP Forms and Handbook section. If you have any other questions about this great opportunity for our athlete’s, please contact the Directors of Development, Chet Tuinstra or Carlton Nether or contact National Director, Tom Wondrash.

SCTP Banquets Raise Funds to Support Scholarships & Teams

The SCTP has run several national banquets in March only to see some huge returns and support by teams and the general public! The largest banquet to date was held Friday, March 16th in Waterford, WI. The Wisconsin banquet completed its 5th year running, raising funds for programs and scholarships administered by the SCTP National organization. This year’s banquets featured a Henry Rifle with the SCTP logo engraved into the stock. The funds raised from those 2 live auction items (Wisconsin and Iowa) will be given out to lucky recipients of scholarships in those 2 states. The Wisconsin banquet raised $1,300 and will be recognized as the “Scherrer Construction” scholarship while the Iowa banquet raised $1,050 and will be named the “Bobby Wood“scholarship and awarded to a deserving Iowa athlete! The Wisconsin banquet had not only local representation but SCTP team representation as well. Coaches and families from 10 local teams (representing about 700 athletes) in Wisconsin attended the festivities! The local team (BHS Demons Shooting Team) was the host of this year’s banquet securing silent auction items and donations from various local businesses in support of the National organization. In Iowa, the BGM Shotgunners took the lead for their 2nd annual SCTP National banquet to date! Both teams raised some much needed funds for themselves as well as local support of their programs. The 2nd annual Iowa banquet was held at the Manatt Center in Brooklyn, Iowa and was also well attended and supported by local businesses and people in the community. While this banquet was the first one run by the current team members and coaches, they did an exceptional job in securing help and support by the team, parents and others! In running these banquets, the SCTP also raised funds in support of its foundation, the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). Promoting and supporting foundation memberships also helps secure the future of the SSSF’s programs! “We couldn’t have been happier with the results of this year’s banquets!” Said Tom Wondrash, SCTP’s National Director. “These funds are used for several things including new programs and team support. Scholarships given out to SCTP athletes utilizes the biggest portion of the funds raised and we absolutely appreciate the help by the teams and families in making this possible”

2018 SCTP National Team Trains in Gainesville

Thinking to start the year with some early season warm weather training, the Scholastic Clay Target Program National Team held its first training camp of 2018 at Gator Skeet and Trap Club in Gainesville, Florida January 3-5. Winter Storm Grayson, however, had other ideas. In spite of pouring rain and freezing temperatures, these athletes accepted the challenge, layered up, and shot just over 5000 targets in three days. SCTP athletes in attendance included  Mark Shields (NT/Missouri), AJ Nomina (NT/Colorado), Sarah Schwacher (NT/Wisconsin), Jack Brosseau (NT/Florida), Tyler Thiede (NT/Wisconsin), Madeleine Taylor (NT/Alaska), Jay Bible (walk on/Florida), Abbey Wigh (walk on/Florida), Scott Schuldt (walk on/Florida). “It was pretty miserable the first day, but they put their heads down and went to work. Goals don’t wait for the weather to clear up,” said head coach, Terri DeWitt. She and assistant skeet coach Joe Buffa will host another training camp in Tucson, Arizona prior to the USA Shooting Spring Selection Match in March. Other training camps are planned for 2018, but not yet finalized. “We couldn’t be more proud of Terri and the leadership she is providing for the SCTP National Team!” Said SCTP National Director, Tom Wondrash. “This practice and training is one of many to come that will help these team members surge in the International disciplines. People like Terri and Joe Buffa out there working with these athletes is a very welcome addition to our program!” National Team (NT) athletes earned their spot via participation and placement in the 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program International Championships held July 23-29, 2017. 2018 national team members receive ongoing coaching in the international shooting disciplines, a USA Shooting jacket, paid fall selection match fees and ammo, along with an SCTP National Team vest, five cases of NobelSport Quattro Finest International ammunition and more!

Purchase ATA/NSCA/NSSA Memberships Through SCTP and Receive Team Endowment Funds!

Is your team planning on shooting your 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state shoot or perhaps a regional or our national event this year? If so, we have a program to help SCTP teams with National Governing Body (NGB) fees for the 2017/2018 shooting season as well as growing your team’s MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment account! Background Since 2007 the Scholastic Clay Target Program has maintained partnerships with several of our NGB’s including the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA)National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) and National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA). These partnerships require that we host “registered events” at our state (where possible) and national championships and therefore our athletes competing in these events must have current memberships with the respective NGB. These partnerships provide many benefits to SCTP athletes including:
  1. Provide a pathway and additional opportunities for youth and families to continue participating in competition clay target shooting outside of the regular SCTP season.
  2. Provide much needed SCTP Scholarship funding to our graduating athletes. In 2017 the SSSF awarded $99,600 in college scholarships, supported in part by donations from our NGB partners.
  3. Enable SCTP athletes to apply for scholarship funds available only to national governing body members through the respective NGB scholarship programs.
  4. National governing bodies provide an official historical record of an athlete's scores which are frequently requested when applying to colleges with shooting programs.
Facilitating continued involvement in the shooting sports is part of the mission of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation /SCTP and we believe these partnerships with NGBs help us accomplish our mission. 2018 Incentive Program For every dollar that your team spends on NGB memberships sent in through the SHOT system, we will send that exact amount of money to your team’s MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment account! This will include your team’s coaches and adult volunteer memberships that are also paid through our system!! For example: “Team A” has 100 athletes who all shoot Trap. They remit payment (through SHOT or via check to SCTP Headquarters) for 100 athletes’ ATA membership dues of $12 per athlete = $1,200. The SCTP/SSSF will then send that exact amount of money into “Team A’s” Midway USA Foundation account. It’s that simple! This only includes NGB membership dues paid through the SCTP. Dues paid directly to the ATA, NSCA or NSSA are not eligible. This will include ALL NGB membership dues paid starting Sept. 1st, 2017 until May 31st OR until the first $150,000 in NGB membership dues have been received, whichever occurs first. Teams MUST have an active account with the MidwayUSA Foundation prior to May 31st in order to receive Team Endowment funding. So coaches, when registering your team remember to pay athlete NGB membership dues at that time to take advantage of this opportunity to grow your teams’ MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment accounts! Taking care of these fees at the time of athlete registration is as simple as checking a box in the SHOT system! Please feel free to contact our SCTP staff if you have any questions.
