Iowa Girl Scout builds trap shooting range for entire community

BROOKLYN, IA Never giving up. One eastern Iowa teen wanted to quit many times. But she kept going, and now she is just about done building a new trap shooting range all for her community. Brooklyn teenager, Lizzy Worthington, was on a trap shooting team in high school. The problem was the closest range to practice at was about 45 minutes away. So, for her Girl Scout's Gold award project, she decided to build a trap shooting range closer to home. She built a range in Malcom, Iowa. Lizzy hopes more schools and people in the surrounding towns can use the range. She also hopes it can promote gun safety by teaching people the safe way to shoot. She says the range took two years and many hours to build. The project cost more then 50 thousand dollars. Lizzy is now up for the Girl Scout's National Young Women of Distinction Award for her efforts with this project. There will be an open house at the shooting range on August 5th from 9 in the morning until 11. It is located at 1157 U.S. Highway 6 Malcom, Iowa. I remember the support and help I was given by the coaches and older shooters on our team. This has made me become more mindful of new shooters on our team now. I try to be helpful to the young shooters because of the help I was so graciously given when I started. SCTP/Kids & Clays Sporting Clays Shoot At 2017 Nationals

pic-600x229July 14 and 15 the Cardinal Shooting Center was the 2nd annual, 100 target sporting clays fun shoot benefiting Kids & Clays and the Scholastic Clay Target Program. The event was held during SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships. Youth and adults, competed in this fun 100 target Sporting Clays charity event! The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is the nation’s leader in youth development shooting sports programs.  The Kids and Clays Foundation supports a series of shooting events across the country with all proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities.  All proceeds from this special two-day event helped each organization fulfill their mission. Dave Miller Exhibition Shoot at Nationals - Presented by CZ-USA! Join Dave Miller at the CZ-USA Demo Field (near the grandstand area) on Wednesday, July 12 at 2:00PM for a special demonstration! Everyone is welcome to attend! David has over 20 years of experience in the competitive shooting community and has lived to see the sport evolve into the world’s fastest growing shotgun sport. He is respected as one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the sporting clays community with a Master class title, and one of the best shooters in the United States. David is also the main star on the Outdoors TV show CZ-USA American Gun Dog TV. David recently accomplished setting a new Guinness World Record for the most sporting clay targets shot in 1 hour— 3653 clays in May of 2015, followed by winning the Missouri State Sporting Clays Championship in July 2015. All the proceeds from the world record accomplishment will go to Pheasant Forever and Quail Forever’s Shooting Sports Endowment to benefit generations of new shooters forever! SCTP, PITA to Host Western Trap Shooting Tournament

PITAThe Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), in conjunction with the Pacific International Trapshooting Association (PITA) Grand Pacific Championships, will host the SCTP Western U.S. Trap Shooting Tournament at the Evergreen Sportsman's Club in Olympia, Washington. This will be a 200-target, 16-yard singles event on Thursday-Friday, July 23-24. The tournament will run concurrently with PITA’s Y-E-S program and Event #13 & #15 of PITA’s Grand Pacific Championships. SCTP teams with memberships in the PITA and ATA are welcome. Youth membership in PITA is free. Over $30,000 in team endowment funding will be available. Squad and athlete awards will be presented in Senior and Intermediate divisions. A limited number of slots are available, and teams must register by July 5. Registration is through the SHOT system at www.sssfonline.org.

Indiana Forms Youth Clay Target Shooting League

December 6 was an historic day for clay target shooting in Indiana. A youth trap shooting league was formed for the state, with 14 youth shooting teams meeting at the historic Kingen Gun Club to plan the 2015 season for the new league, which will utilize SCTP rules and guidelines for its shoots. Ten competitions are scheduled in 2015 for the Hoosier youth shooters, including an SCTP State Championship and the SCTP National Championship. Among the attendees at the formative meeting were Mark Burgess, SCTP State Director, and Chet Tuinstra, SCTP Regional Field Representative. Formation of the league was due to the efforts of Derek Marshall, Superintendent of Attica Consolidated School Corporation in Attica, Indiana, who started by contacting every youth trap shooting program and every gun club in the state with the goal of organizing the people in Indiana shooting sports to create a statewide trap shooting league for youth. Student shooters will compete in one of five divisions according to SCTP rules, and awards will be presented at each event. In the future, the Hoosier Clay Target Association hopes to expand to encompass skeet and sporting clays.

Jamaican Shooting Program Seeks Guidance from SCTP

The U.S. isn't the only place where clay target shooting is enjoying growth among student athletes. In Jamaica, the shotgun sports are experiencing an upward trend, and youth are responsible for much of that growth. In 2011, Jamaica's national coach initiated a junior shooting program with only five participants. Now, 65 to 75 youth shooters regularly participate in events. At a recent inter-school competition, 12 school teams competed, and there is a movement in place to gain representation in skeet shooting at the Olympic Games. With the growth of interest in shooting among high school students, the Jamaican program has sought guidance from none other than the largest youth shooting program in the U.S. -- the Scholastic Clay Target Program. Among other areas of development, the Jamaican program is hoping to open doors that will lead to the availability of shooting scholarships for its students at U.S. universities. Who knows, you may someday meet your Jamaican counterparts at an SCTP event or even have them as teammates on college teams! Stay tuned.

SCTP’s National Team Championships Open Registration with Record Numbers

Registration is now open for next month’s SCTP National Team Championships, and if the first day of registration is any indication, it is sure to be a record-shattering event. During the first 24 hours that teams could register for the National Championships, more than 627 student athletes were signed up for SCTP events, representing 40 teams from 15 states. Almost 1000 event registrations were completed during the first day. The event will be held July 14-19 at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL. In addition, SCTP will host shooters at our National Championships for international events on July 25-29 in Colorado Springs, CO. As in previous years, SCTP teams will compete in Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays during the weeklong event. For this year’s Nationals, teams can also compete in Doubles Trap, Handicap Trap, and Skeet Doubles events. A new College Open category will allow college students to compete at the National Championships with their former high school teams. Sharing the spotlight with the Scholastic Clay Target Program during Nationals will be the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP), concurrently holding its second Junior/Senior National Championships. The two programs will award $713,000 in endowment funds to competing teams at our national events, representing $450,000 to SCTP teams at the Sparta tournament; $156,000 at SCTP’s National Championships for international events; and $107,000 to SPP teams at Nationals. Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation will donate the endowment funds to team accounts at the MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc. In addition to a week of shooting competition, other activities are planned to benefit our student athletes, including College Recruiting Day to provide recruiting opportunities to colleges with shooting teams, and Youth Conservation Day, when athletes will learn about various conservation organizations and opportunities for involvement. “We’re off to a tremendous start with registrations for our National Championships, and we’re expecting another record year, following a record 2000-plus shooters in 2013,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Director. “The SCTP staff and our dedicated sponsors work on this event year-round to ensure it is the nation’s premier youth shooting competition. With its wide range of shooting events and activities, abundant endowment funds the teams can earn, and opportunities for teams to compete against the nation’s best, we’re confident this is an event without equal.” SCTP head coaches can log in to their accounts at www.sssfonline.org to register.
