This past December marked the first time a Level I NRA/USAS/CMP Shotgun Coach Certification Class has been taught in the great state of Hawaii. Helping put this all together was local coach (and previous resident of Iowa) and new team coach, Tom Griffiths. Tom helped make history not only for Hawaii but for the NRA and the SCTP!! Tom along with coaches Richard Hoeflinger and Greg Kunz will head up the newly formed team, The Big Island Breakers. “My goal is to bring this team to the SCTP nationals and see a feather banner with the state of Hawaii on it displayed along with all of the other states that attend the biggest and best youth National Championships in the world,” Griffiths said. “We want to break our share of the 1 million plus competition targets that will be thrown for that event!” Instructing the class of 14 in Hilo was NRA/NCDS Level II Instructor and SCTP National Director, Tom Wondrash. “It was my pleasure to teach the first Level I class in Hawaii and bring in these new and dedicated coaches to the SCTP,” Wondrash said. “We are looking forward to the new teams, athletes and families that this will surely ignite.” Amanda Wondrash was also available and worked with the new coaches on how to use the SHOT system, registering athletes, assistant coaches and general use of the website for tournaments and fun shoots. The Big Island Breakers and several other newly formed teams will be training at the Hilo Trap & Skeet club located just a few miles out of Hilo. These teams are also considering running their state shoot in conjunction with the PITA state shoot also being held at the Hilo Trap & Skeet Club. Just in the last several months and leading into March, there will have been well over 225 NRA/USAS/CMP Level I Shotgun Coaches trained by SCTP affiliated instructors / NRA NCDS including Scott Moniot, Chet Tuinstra, Hank Garvey, Jim Dickerson, Mike Carson and Tom Wondrash. Photo courtesy of Andre' Dall'au. We had a great turnout for the Southwest Winter Regional match , which took place on February 6 at the Cawthorne Cartridge Club in Navasota, Texas. Teams from Texas and as far away as Washington, New York, Florida, Maryland, Colorado, Alabama, and Arizona journeyed to the Lone Star state for some friendly competition. Service Academies (West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Marksmanship Unit) all competed this year. We also had a few new teams join us just in time for the match. This was the first match that the U.S. Air Force Academy took part in. The Montgomery County Marksmanship Team and Hays County 4H Shooting Sports all joined just prior to the match and both had great turnouts for the match. This year 132 athletes competed in the match. Thank you to GLOCK and the Texas State Rifle Association for sponsoring the match. Thank you also to Kevin Jimmerson and Chuck Jones for being the match directors for the match.
On Friday, January 29, 2016, Deputy Dustin Brock, Deputy Thomas Stege,
Deputy Charrone Reed, Leon County Sheriff’s Explorer Program, and David
Kirk, Florida state advisor with the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP),
conducted a training workshop on speed steel shooting at the Tallahassee
Rifle & Pistol Club for advisors from the Florida Sheriffs Explorer
Association. Twenty five deputy sheriffs from Leon, Hamilton, Charlotte, Broward, Palm Beach,
Manatee, and Saint Lucie counties participated in the training. The
deputies had a great time shooting the steel, and felt the SASP would benefit recruitment and retention. The purpose of the training was to emphasize the safety, fun, and
excitement of shooting modern steel targets. In addition, there was
discussion of how team competition in the shooting sports teaches
responsibility, discipline, leadership, and citizenship values. Based on the workshop, the deputies will now organize and train Explorer
Teams throughout Florida to compete in the SASP and the Florida Law Enforcement Explorer Shooting League. The Florida Law Enforcement Explorer Shooting League was organized by
the Leon County Sheriff’s Post and David Kirk to provide safe, fun, and
constructive shooting activities around the state and national

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) national match will be held in conjunction with the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) national match at the Cardinal Center, in Marengo, Ohio, July 9-16, 2016. The tentative schedule for match competition will be the same as in past years. We will offer 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. times, with the exception of the last Saturday (July 16), on which day we will only have the 9 a.m. starting time due to the awards ceremony later that day. Registration information will be available on the website in the near future.
Nineteen coaches earned their NRA coaching credentials during the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Level 1 Coaches Class hosted by the Daniel Boone Conservation League in Wisconsin on February 6-7, 2016. The Shooting Coach Program is a cooperative effort of the NRA, USA Shooting, and the Civilian Marksmanship Program. The NRA Level 1 Pistol Coaches Class now includes action shooting as one of the disciplines. The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is the model for action shooting. The additional coaches were needed to address the huge growth several of the Wisconsin teams have experienced since last year. One team actually has grown from 15 last year to 50 this year and that growth was seen even before the new rifle program was announced. Congratulations new coaches and good luck on a successful season with your athletes. The next pistol coaches’ class on the schedule is in Plymouth, Michigan, April 2 & 3, 2016. Coaches who are registering at sssfonline.org are reminded that their paperwork is not done until all steps have been completed. This includes submitting the required background check every two years and completing the one-time Double-Goal Coaching Course for new coaches. Until these steps have been completed, a coach is not considered registered and is not covered under SSSF‘s liability insurance. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), parent organization for the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP), is announcing a change of venue for the 2016 SCTP and SASP National Championship events. The 2016 National Championships are being planned for July 9-16 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex (WSRC) located in Sparta, Illinois, has been home of the SSSF National Championships for the last several years. Due to the unresolved statewide budget issues in Illinois, the state-owned WSRC remains closed at this time with no communicated schedule for reopening. The SSSF board of directors and senior leadership team have evaluated different options to keep the event in Sparta. Due to the continued unresolved budget situation and potential for government-mandated continued closure, the Foundation feels it is in the best interest of its members to provide certainty for the 2016 National Championship event. The SSSF National Championships contract with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) extends through July of 2017. The SSSF and IDNR have mutually agreed to suspend the contract for 2016 and will meet again to revisit the terms for 2017 in September of this year. The Foundation has entered into a one year agreement with the Cardinal Center Campground and Shooting Center to host the 2016 National Championships. The Center has 52 trap fields, 3 sporting clays courses, and rifle and pistol range construction is well underway. Several large-scale infrastructure projects are commencing at the center to accommodate the multiple shooting disciplines the SCTP and SASP championships bring. These projects include construction of 14 new skeet fields and 14 new action shooting bays which are scheduled to be completed well prior to the championships in July. Considered Ohio’s premier public shooting sports facility, the Cardinal Center offers impressive shooting ranges, as well as an indoor heated pool, lake for fishing, lots of outdoor activities, and great facilities for family camping, including 550 camp sites and Wi-Fi service available on the grounds.
