The Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program will be holding it’s fourth and final State Championship from
June 23 to 25 at the WTA Homegrounds in Rome, Wisconsin. The previous three weekends had record turnouts for International Bunker Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays with nearly 25% growth over last year. The weekend will consist of 100 Championship Singles targets shot
on Friday and
Saturday plus Handicap, Doubles and International Bunker events
on Sunday. In addition, there will be a Make-A-Break competition all three days along with shooting sports vendors, gun demonstrations and Wisconsin’s largest "Last Competitor Standing”
on Saturday afternoon. Over 1400 athletes from 62 Wisconsin SCTP teams are registered for the event with almost 2,000 registrations, an increase of over 30% from last year. Approximately 300 team and individual awards will be presented at the four Championship events. Nearly 20% of all registered athletes are females again this year.
Friday, June 23 - 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. 100 Singles Championship, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day, open training for Trap, Doubles, Handicap and Bunker.
Saturday, June 24th - 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 100 Singles Championship, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day, Last Competitor Standing.
Sunday, June 25th - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 100 Doubles, 100 Handicap and 50 International Bunker, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day. The WTA Homegrounds features 30 American Trap Fields, Wisconsin’s only Olympic bunker and 104 fully hook-up campsites on 280 acres in the town of Rome. With a record number of teams and athletes registering, attendance at the upcoming 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Programs (SCTP) National Championships is on track to break records in all facets of the tournament and clay target shooting. The national event is scheduled for July 8-15, 2017, in Marengo, Ohio, at the Cardinal Shooting Center located just north of Columbus. With over a million competition targets scheduled to be thrown, teams from 23+ states will compete for national titles in skeet, sporting clays, singles trap, handicap trap, double trap, skeet doubles and bunker trap. This year’s event sits currently at over 5,300 registrations (up over 700 from the best year on record) with 15 to 20 teams to register yet! With practice rounds and side games, this year’s event will easily see over 1.5 million total targets thrown, making this the largest youth clay target shooting tournament in the world! 
“That’s a lot of clay in the air -- roughly eight semi loads of targets,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director and national tournament director. “Our industry sponsors and support have to be excited about that. I know our target sponsor, White Flyer, is very excited about this year’s tournament. This year’s nationals is a testament of the strong support we receive from the industry as well as the dedication of our teams, athletes, coaches and families. We couldn’t be more excited to see these numbers and welcome everyone out to see this year’s event.” The skeet portion of this year’s tournament (governed by the National Skeet Shooting Association - NSSA) will be yet another record-breaking event in itself. With more than 956 registered athletes (contributing over 191,000 targets to the one million plus for the tournament), this will be the largest skeet tournament in the world. The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is pleased to announce the Browning Scholarship in conjunction with the 2017 SCTP National Championships in Marengo, Ohio. The scholarship opportunity is open to all high school competitors in the 16-yard trap singles competition who are shooting a Browning shotgun and registered for the scholarship opportunity. Coaches (or athletes) must register at the registration desk “prior” to the competition to be eligible.

Members of Ohio’s House of Representatives recently presented a resolution honoring the Ohio Steel Stingers, a Butler County 4-H SASP team, for winning first place in four divisions of the 2016 SASP National Championships. The 
Keller said, “Their accomplishments as national champions demonstrate good sportsmanship, citizenry, and excellence in all they do.” Condit also praised the team, saying, “These young men and women have clearly distinguished themselves not only through their athletic talent but also through their perseverance and sportsmanship.” The 2016 National Championships took place on July 2016 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, where the Steel Stingers also placed third in the Rimfire Pistol in three divisions: Intermediate/Entry, Intermediate/Advanced and Senior/Junior Varsity.
Libby has fared well in state high school athletics this year, and now they’ve brought home medals in clay target shooting. The Libby Rock Crushers have been around for about six years now and are part of an organization called the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), which includes the clay target sports of trap, skeet and sporting clays. Our athletes have competed at a state level since the beginning. Now we continue to produce shooters that are challenging our experienced adult shooters, let alone their youth counterparts. A couple of weeks ago the Rock Crushers hosted the Western Regional SCTP shoot. This shoot brought 30 shooters from Libby, Hamilton, Missoula, the Flathead and Bigfork to participate in a 150-bird event. Our team took home the high overall runner-up trophy. That team consisted of Dameon Kelch, Isaac O’Rourke, Austin Rasmussen, Nate Pomeroy and Maverick Owens. Dameon Kelch was also the individual skeet champion. Maverick Owens, Anna Marie Kebschull and Walker Mills also won their division in trap. Then this past weekend we took five young men to the State SCTP Shoot in Billings. The Rock Crushers represented Libby very well, but just missed placing by a couple of targets in the team events. However, Dameon Kelch faired really well, taking second in Varsity in sporting clay and third in both trap and skeet. Austin Rasmussen finished third in both skeet and sporting clays. Isaac O’Rouke had the best skeet score for our team and placed fifth overall but fourth in his division. The toughest division was the intermediate division (seventh and eighth graders). Four of the top five scores came out of this division, where high schoolers compete against both other high schoolers and college-aged contestants. Nate Pomeroy had his personal best trap with an 89. Maverick Owens improved on his season averages. Congratulations to all who competed in the 2017 Wisconsin SCTP International Trap Championship on the bunker at the WTA Homegrounds, June 3-4. The 2017 event boasted the highest scores of any competition on the bunker since it opened in 2014. Ten athletes scored over 100 of 125 in this very difficult discipline, including the first 25-straight in a competition.
