The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is pleased to congratulate 17-year old Sean Laurent of Arnold, Missouri, for winning the Browning Scholarship during the 2016 Scholastic Clay Target Program’s (SCTP) National team Championships. A junior at Seckman High School, Laurent is one of the 43-member Team Henges, a youth shooting group affiliated with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Laurent also posted a personal best of 199 of a possible 200 targets in singles from the 16-yard line for his national win. "The feeling is unbelievable," Laurent said.  "To win at Nationals and also receive such a large scholarship was something that I never could have imagined.  I can't thank Browning and their supporters enough." Laurent said he hasn't decided which college he'll be attending, but he plans to study engineering in the fall of 2017, and the scholarship will be put toward his tuition to that school "I hope to continue shooting in college, and I am specifically looking at schools that have a shotgun program." He said he has his father to thank for his love of shooting. "I have been shooting competition trap for five years," he said. "My dad introduced me to shooting nine years ago.  I've shot a Browning since I first started shooting and have been competing with my Browning 725 Trap for the past three years." Laurent is currently on the Student Council and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honors Program at his high school. He's also a member of his high school archery team. Rafe Nielsen, communications manager at Browining, said Browning is a proud supporter of the SCTP and is honored to present this scholarship. "The future of shooting is squarely on the shoulders of the next generation and the SCTP does a great job of providing opportunities for kids to get out there and learn the sport," Nielsen said.  "We feel a huge responsible to do our part to help grow and strengthen the youth shooting programs around the country. The Browning customer is the most loyal in the business. We know our greatest asset is the grassroots support from these great customers. This scholarship is a small way to thank those that have bought, used, loved, and have been successful with our products. We wanted to provide an opportunity to reward those loyal customers." The 2016 Nationals were held July 9-16 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio. The event drew 2,369 competitors from 34 states to participate in trap, skeet and sporting clays through SCTP, and action rifle and action pistol events through SASP.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal recently published an article congratulating members of the Wisconsin youth shooting teams for their outstanding performance at the SCTP and SASP National Championships. The article, written by Paul Smith, Milwaukee Journal Sentinal outdoors editor, states the performance of Wisconsin squads and individuals cemented the state's standing as a national leader among youth shooting sports. Ben Berka, president of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, was quoted as saying, "Wisconsin has established a pedigree, a tradition. It's absolutely no surprise when a Wisconsin team takes first. In fact, many people expect it." The 2016 nationals were held July 9-16 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio. The event drew 2,369 competitors from 34 states to participate in trap, skeet and sporting clays through SCTP, and action rifle and action pistol events through SASP. The eight-day championship saw 2,369 unique athletes from 34 different states competing in trap, skeet and sporting clays, plus action rifle and action pistol events. The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) had total of 4,576 event entries (up 74 over 2015) and the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) had a total of 530 entries (up 174 over 2015).

The eight-day championship saw 2,369 unique athletes from 34 different states.
In total, SCTP athletes fired upon 876,000 clay targets in competition and another 85,000 in side events and evening competitions. Approximately 1,200 SCTP athletes competed in the Last Competitor Standing competition over two nights. In addition to the competition, there was much for athletes and their families to do, including the All-Industry Opening Ceremonies, Pizza Party, Ice Cream Social and side games such as Crazy Quail, Make-a-Break and the Action Shooting side matches. The college recruiting day and Larry and Brenda Potterfield (of MidwayUSA) meet and greet were also very popular. With multiple vendors onsite and Columbus within 30 minutes, there were plenty for families to see and do during their downtime. The SSSF would like to thank all of the coaches organizing SCTP and SASP teams and for making the trip to Ohio this year and also all of the parents supporting these young shooters. A big thanks also goes out to the Cardinal Center, its staff and volunteers for all of their hard work and investment in facilities to accommodate our event. Thanks also to the many sponsors and vendors who supported and/or attended the event!

SCTP and SASP are youth development programs in which adult coaches and other volunteers use shooting sports to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills. SCTP was developed as a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) until the SSSF was created in 2007 to operate the SCTP. In 2012, SSSF created the SASP and became the managing foundation of both programs. Not So Fast…Wisconsin Beats Tennessee

Tennessee might have the largest number of shotgun shooters here at the SCTP Nationals, but over on the pistol and rifle ranges, where they’re competing in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program Nationals, it’s a different story. The Badger State overtook Tennessee as the top state in terms of shooter participation, edging out their rivals from the south with 19.8% of the shooters hailing from Wisconsin compared to 19.5% coming from Tennessee. It might be a narrow margin of victory but a win is a win. SSSF-16 Top 5 SASP States

Annie Get Your Gun, You Too Taylor

SSSF-Thu-Taylor-1Participation by women - in this case perhaps girls - here in at the SCTP and SASP National Championships is, well, high. Girls account for nearly 1 in every 5 shooters with 19.3% of the total. By sport the numbers are more interesting. In the shotgun sports of SCTP the girls make up 17.7% of the shooters. But when it comes to the pistol and rifle sports of SASP, girls are now 30.7% of the total shooters. 2016 Gender Participation One of those girls helping to drive up participation is 11-year-old Taylor Diener of the Union Grove Shooting Club in Wisconsin. Taylor started shooting trap two years ago and just this past March made the leap into rimfire rifle competition in preparation for this year’s SASP Nationals. On the range she’s hard to miss, unless of course she’s surrounded by a cluster of adults who all tower over her. Cute and confident she seems totally unfazed by either the flood of attention given to young new shooters like her or the pressure of competing at the national level. Even when her rifle magazine has a feeding issue, a world ending disaster in the minds of many competitive shooters racing the timer, Taylor calmly keeps working the action and pulling the trigger. A lot of the young shooters, and several of the young girls shooting, demonstrate this same poise under pressure. And after, rather than voice any frustration or disappointment, Taylor focuses on the future, as in next year when she plans to add doubles trap, maybe sporting clays and even rimfire pistol to her shooting schedule. No wonder participation by girls - and of course women - continues to grow in the shooting sports.
