NSSA/SSSF Unique Opportunity to Support Youth Shooting

Sale Charles Gates’ Krieghoff shotgun to benefit youth shooting sports.
Two years ago, National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) member Charles Gates died leaving a wonderful legacy gift in his estate. Unbeknownst to either organization at the time, Mr. Gates had structured his estate to donate his prized Krieghoff shotgun collection to be sold and the proceeds to specifically support the youth shooting initiatives of both the NSSA and the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). While his estate benefited from the tax advantages of planned giving, his thoughtfulness also enabled him to further his passion to support youth shooting long after his passing. At this time, one gun from Mr. Gates’ 10-gun collection remains to be sold. This is a highly engraved K-20 Majestic Grade, Serial #001149, with gold lions, engraved by renowned Krieghoff engraver Kathrin Nonn. It is a 20 gauge with 30” barrels, a #5 skeet stock and Schnable forearm. The selling price is $40,000.00 and pictures of the gun engraving pattern and Ms. Nonn can be viewed at Alamo Sporting Arms web site at www.alamosportingarms.com. This beautiful gun will also be on display during the upcoming World Skeet Championships and Sporting Clays Nationals at Alamo Sporting Arms at the NSC in San Antonio. Any questions about this K-20 maybe be directed to Pam Young at Alamo Sporting Arms at pam@alamosportingarms.com. Louise Terry, SSSF Board Chairman and NSSA Past President comments: “This is a unique chance to own a special masterpiece while supporting the youth shooting programs of both SSSF’s SCTP program and the NSSA.  Both SSSF and NSSA are committed to teaching our young adults the attributes of good fellowship, good sportsmanship, and firearm safety thru our shotgun sports while reinforcing strong American family values. It is also a wonderful example of the power of planned giving which can benefit your personal estate as well as charitable 501©(3) organizations like SSSF and NSSA.” For more information on planned giving and other ways to give, please feel free to contact SSSF BOD member, Mark Wade at mwade@sssfonline.com  or SSSF Executive Director, Ben Berka, at bberka@sssfonline.com. Thank you for helping us introduce and encourage many young adults who otherwise would not have a chance to know and enjoy these shooting sports we love.

High Plains Drifters Win 2nd Place for Float in Colorado Parade

IMG_0364The High Plains Drifters were thrilled to win 2nd place for the float they entered in the Strasburg Hometown Days parade in Strasburg, Colorado. "We wanted to attract some new shooters for the team and we figured a unique and successfully way to do that would be to enter a float in the parade," Tim Wolfe, coach for the High Plains Drifters, said. "We wanted something out of the ordinary to show the public that there are young kids out there being responsible with guns and that they can create a positive team atmosphere around shooting activities. We came up with the concept of a skeet field because it would be very visual and would leave no doubt what one of the disciplines our youth shoot." More than 15 people worked on creating and building the float. During the parade, kids handed out candy, flyers and miniature frisbee's ( looked like clays) with the team name on it. "We received a multitude of compliments and comments on how wonderful it was to see the young kids be involved in such a great concept," Wolfe said. "At the judging stand we even got a standing ovation from a large number of people." The float won 2nd place and was shown in two newspapers that reach the eastern section of Colorado.

The Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), a Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) member state, continues to set new records for participation each year. For the 2016 season, SCTP athletes in the Hawkeye state fired upon 1,852,750 clay targets in the course of competition. This total represents a 700,400 target increase over the 2015 season. Much like other traditional sports, Iowa’s clay target league consists of face-to-face competition led by local volunteers with events happening the first of September through the end of May.  In all there were 518 league matches conducted at 65 different shooting facilities supporting the 100+ SCTP teams across the state. League play in Iowa is facilitated by the SSSF’s Shooting Organization Technology (SHOT) system, which provides coaches with the registration, league and shoot management tools needed to navigate the season smoothly and efficiently. The Iowa DNR serves as state advisor for both SCTP and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) and has invested in these programs since 2006.  The Department provides ongoing program administration, shooting coach education and staffing for the state championships and other major events.  When the department took up the program in 2006 there were about 400 student athletes involved.  Today there are almost 3,400.

“We are excited to see the continued growth of the shooting sports in Iowa,” said Chuck Gipp, director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “The shooting sports play an important role in connecting Iowa’s youth with the outdoors. This program is successful because of the local volunteers who spend countless hours recruiting and coaching our youth in these sports, and without them the popularity and growth of this program would not be possible.” As state advisor, the Iowa DNR is supported by the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program, Inc. and by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation’s SCTP staff members. "With close to 2 million targets thrown at over 60 clubs, Iowa remains one of the leaders in SCTP activity across the country,” said Carlton Nether, SCTP western region director of development. “With the continued support of the IDNR, SCTP looks to continue its growth in the state, across the western region and the entire US." The league season in Iowa culminated at the SCTP state championship events during the month of June.  The championships attracted over 2,200 athletes over four separate weekend events totaling over 3,200 entries to conclude the in-state season. Many Iowa teams continued on to compete successfully at the SCTP national championships in Marengo, Ohio, July 9-16. Complete results for the Iowa state championships and other SCTP shoots around the country can be found at www.sssfonline.org then navigating to the results section of the website. About the SSSF The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is responsible for all aspects of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) across the United States. SCTP and SASP are youth development programs in which adult coaches and other volunteers use shooting sports to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills. SCTP was developed as a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) until the SSSF was created in 2007 to operate the SCTP. In 2012, SSSF created the SASP and became the managing foundation of both programs. For more information about SSSF, visit www.sssfonline.org.
