Custer, Washington Scholastic Action Shooting Sports “Team Gotta” Heads to the 2019 SASP National Championships to Defend Multiple Titles

Twelve (12) Youth Athletes from Custer, Washington based SASP Team Gotta are heading to the 2019 SASP National Championships in Marengo, Ohio this week to defend a host of titles earned at the 2018 SASP National Championships.

In 2018 Team Gotta won 1st Place in Rimfire Pistol, 1911 Pistol and Open Optic Rifle. Team Gotta, the SASP that travels each year across the country to attend the National Championships hold multiple events throughout the year to cover the cost of travel for the team athletes and coaches. Team Gotta Head Coach, Jim Coffey proudly stated, “last year and again this year our team athletes did not have to pay a dime to travel to Nationals”. The entire teams’ efforts throughout the year along with a grant from the Midway Foundation made all that possible.”

 
In addition to competing in numerous SASP events, Team Gotta youth athlete Naomi McKay, who finished 2018 as the Rimfire Pistol Senior Lady High Overall sang the National Anthem at the 2019 National Championships opening ceremonies on Wednesday, July 17, 2019.

SIG Team Captain Max Michel to appear and train at 2019 SASP Nationals

Come meet and learn from SIG team Captain, Max Michel at the 2019 Scholastic Action Shooting Program National Championships!

All action shooting enthusiasts attending the 2019 National Championships at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH are invited to attend a unique learning opportunity presented by SIG. Clinic times are Monday, July 15 10:00AM and 3:00PM at the action shooting range. Max will also be shooting the official SASP course of fire on Monday starting at Noon.

Max will also be providing personalized coaching to 4 specially selected SASP athletes at noon while he shoots the SASP Nationals stages. The 4 SASP athletes will be chosen from those in attendance and will get to shoot one stage with Max while he coaches them through the stage.

Max Michel, Jr. is one of the most dominant shooters in the world today. Michel is a Guinness World Record holder and International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) World Champion (World Shoot XVII). He also holds seven World Speed Shooting Championships (2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2009, 2007 and 2005), ten USPSA National Championships (2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004), five US Steel National Championships (2017, 2014, 2011, 2009, 2008), and more than 200 other major championship victories. As an international competitor, Michel has represented the United States in the last seven IPSC World Shoots and returned home bearing gold each time.

As the Captain of Team SIG, Max is recognized worldwide as a top tier athlete and instructor, along with being mentor and coach for the team.

SASP Athletes Train & Compete at the Olympic Training Center

Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes had the opportunity to train and compete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.  From May 24-26, 2019 12 Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes learned to shoot the International disciplines of 10 Meter Air Pistol, Sport Pistol and Rapid-Fire Pistol.  Athletes stayed at the Olympic Training Center and were trained by USA Shooting Coach Brent McPherson and former USA National Team Member and USA Shooting Board Member Jim Henderson.   This was SASP’s first Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) in 5 years.

For action shooters the athletes picked up the Olympic disciplines quickly.  Before they left the Olympic Training Center 8 of 12 athletes shot 10M Air Pistol scores that would have qualified them last year to be invited to the Junior Olympic Trials for a chance to make the United States Junior Olympic Team.  Coach Jim Henderson stated, “In all my years of coaching I have never seen a group of athletes pick this up so quickly, and then perform at this high of a level.”

We also had SASP coaches and SASP staff participate in an international discipline coach’s clinic on May 22 and 23 before helping coach the SASP athletes upon their arrival.  Russell Gilkison VA, Samantha Engle MI were the coaches that participated in the coach program.

SASP is excited to watch as these athletes continue to participate in the International disciplines with hopes of one day seeing one of them standing on the podium and the American Flag is raised as they represent our county in international competition.

We look forward to again holding a JODC in 2020.

2019 Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation All-Scholastic Team Announced

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation(SSSF) is proud to announce members of the 2019 All-Scholastic Team!

Over 230 student athletes from 24 states have been named to the team this year and will be recognized at the opening ceremonies of the SSSF/SCTP/SASP Team Championship event on July 17 in Marengo, Ohio.

The All-Scholastic Team recognizes the top student athletes in the SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting Program for their achievements in the classroom, on the range and in their communities. Through an application process, 2019 All-Scholastic Team Members have proven academic excellence by posting 3.0 or better grade point averages, shooting excellent scores in recent competition (95% in trap or skeet, 85% in sporting clays, 88% in international trap/skeet or 75 seconds or less for SASP) and by demonstrating outstanding community involvement.

2019 SCTP & SASP National Championships

The 2019 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships is scheduled for July 13-20th at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. Last year's event had nearly 300 teams and 3,000 athletes from 26 states! We hope you can join us for this season finale!

Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) registration is currently open in the SHOT system for team coaches to register.

Scholastic Clay Target Program pre-registration began on May 15th with general registration through the SHOT system June 1st.

CZ-USA Top Gun Challenge at Nationals

The Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Action Shooting Program are excited to announce the Top Gun Challenge sponsored by CZ-USA is coming back to the 2019 National Championships in Marengo, OH July 13-20!

Top Gun Challenge Eligibility Criteria, Scoring and Prizes

  • Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be current team members in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) AND the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).
     
  • Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be pre-registered to shoot the following events at the 2019 National Championships:
    • 16 Yard Trap
    • Skeet
    • Sporting Clays
    • Rifle (irons, optics or pistol caliber carbine)
    • Centerfire or Rimfire Pistol 
    • 1911/2011 Pistol
       
  • Each athlete wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must complete a registration form in person at the SASP registration desk located at the Cardinal Center Central Entry Building prior to competing in their first event. Athletes will then shoot all competition events as usual. 
     
  • We will compile scores from your events and calculate the winners. Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays is easy you will get the total number of birds you break in each discipline, so a possible 600 points. Since SASP is based on time and not total targets hit, it will be done a little differently. We will take all participants and rank both their rifle times and their pistol times fastest to slowest. 
    • The fastest in each discipline will get 200, second place 199, third place 198 and so on down the line until everyone has a score.  We will add all those points together and the athlete with the most points out of the possible 1,200 will win.
       
  • Every Athlete who competes in all the events and signs up, will receive a Top Gun Challenge challenge coin just for participating and showing your shooting stamina.
     
  • Prizes will include a shotgun, rifle and pistol by CZ-USA with specific models to be announced and many other great prizes!

Apply Now for 2019 SASP Junior Olympic Development Camp

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program is excited to announce, that after a five-year hiatus, the SASP Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) is back. This is a great opportunity for SASP athletes and coaches to learn more about the Olympic disciplines of Air Pistol and Sport Pistol.  You will be learning from Olympic coaches and former US National Team members. The 2019 Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) will take place in Colorado Springs, CO at the Olympic Training Center training grounds for USA’s Olympic shooting athletes! The purpose of the JODC camp is:
  1. To assist USA Shooting in its pursuit of identifying SASP Athletes who have the potential to become USA Shooting Team members and, ultimately, Olympic champions and
  2. To provide SASP Coaches and State Advisors with increased knowledge and skills to become more effective in working with SASP Athletes.
The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation will host the JODC, which is specifically for SASP Athletes, Head and Assistant Coaches, and State Advisors registered with the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation. Coaches, State Advisors, and all registered, active SASP Athletes who are 14 years of age or older in the Intermediate Advanced through Varsity Division, are eligible to apply. The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Shooting have confirmed May 22-27, 2019 for the camp with coaches attending all days and athletes attending May 23-27. Interested coaches and athletes must apply and be selected for the camp.  (Please note these are the same dates as SCTP’s JODC at the OTC.)  The 2019 Junior Olympic Development Camp has room for up to twelve (12) qualified SASP Athletes. (That doesn’t mean all slots must be filled). For active registered Coaches and State Advisors, there are up to six (6) slots for coach training. We do not have final coach beds confirmed, so the application will show two different prices.  One is based on staying in the dorms, the other is for staying at a local hotel. We will confirm with you once we have the final number of beds available.
