What’s Happening at Nationals

The 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) national championships kicked off last Saturday, July 14 and concludes on Saturday, July 21. The event is being hosted by the Cardinal Shooting Center located near Marengo, OH. A total of 275 teams from 26 states are participating - some as close as Ohio and as far as Washington. Over 2,700 athletes are scheduled to participate with over 1.25 million competition shots expected to be fired over 8 days. Athletes from around the country are participating in trap, doubles trap, handicap trap, skeet, doubles skeet, sporting clays, bunker trap, action pistol and action rifle events. Many athletes shoot multiple events translating to almost 7,000 total event entries for the eight day competition. In addition to the main competition events there are many popular side events including the "Last Competitor Standing" shotgun competition and the "Beat the Pro" pistol side match. When not shooting, athletes and their families have been spending time with the dozens of vendors on the Cardinal Center grounds and visiting special guests such as Larry and Brenda Potterfield, owners of MidwayUSA and founders of the MidwayUSA Foundation. The Potterfield's have donated over $100 million to youth shooting sports organizations and teams across the country! Because of generous grants made possible by the Potterfield's, the SSSF has been able to contribute nearly $8 million to SCTP and SASP Team Endowment accounts held at the MidwayUSA Foundation. Larry and Brenda enjoyed a day on the grounds featuring a team meet and greet, rifle shooting and trapshooting with youth athletes. Additionally, pro shooter clinics have been conducted for all coaches and athletes to learn. Clinics have featured Dave Miller, Matt Hopkins, Max Michel, Lena Miculek and Ashley Rheuark. Larry & Brenda Potterfield Donate Over $700,000 to SSSF in April

Larry and Brenda Potterfield, owners of MidwayUSA, donated $717,875 to the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) on April 15 to allow SSSF to support new and existing youth shooting teams. The funds will be used by SSSF as donations to team endowment accounts at the MidwayUSA Foundation. “The continued generosity of Larry and Brenda Potterfield to the youth shooting sports is unmatched," said Ben Berka, SSSF President and Executive Director. "With this gift from the Potterfields, the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation will be making donations to team endowment accounts at the MidwayUSA Foundation throughout the year.” Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) member teams are eligible to earn these endowment funds through shooting competitions and SCTP- or SPP-sponsored fundraising programs. These fundraisers enable teams to raise awareness in their local communities while raising money, both to use now and to grow their endowment accounts. Teams are eligible to withdraw a portion of the funds in their endowment accounts each year to use for equipment, travel, ammunition, uniforms, and other team expenses. Teams can learn more about setting up an endowment account and how to apply for annual grants at www.midwayusafoundation.org. Larry and Brenda Potterfield are Founding Life Diamond Members of the Champion’s Roundtable, which recognizes donors who have made major contributions to the SSSF mission. Larry and Brenda Potterfield, founders and owners of MidwayUSA and founders of the MidwayUSA Foundation, spent last Thursday at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex with SCTP and SPP shooters, touring the National Championship event and even taking time to shoot a round of trap with three lucky SCTP competitors. Anticipating the visit, many teams brought along autographed photos, cards, and other gifts -- including a pair of letter sweaters -- to express their appreciation for the Potterfields' generosity to SSSF programs.
