SASP Athletes Train & Compete at the Olympic Training Center

Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes had the opportunity to train and compete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.  From May 24-26, 2019 12 Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) athletes learned to shoot the International disciplines of 10 Meter Air Pistol, Sport Pistol and Rapid-Fire Pistol.  Athletes stayed at the Olympic Training Center and were trained by USA Shooting Coach Brent McPherson and former USA National Team Member and USA Shooting Board Member Jim Henderson.   This was SASP’s first Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) in 5 years.

For action shooters the athletes picked up the Olympic disciplines quickly.  Before they left the Olympic Training Center 8 of 12 athletes shot 10M Air Pistol scores that would have qualified them last year to be invited to the Junior Olympic Trials for a chance to make the United States Junior Olympic Team.  Coach Jim Henderson stated, “In all my years of coaching I have never seen a group of athletes pick this up so quickly, and then perform at this high of a level.” 

Congratulation to the following SASP athletes who applied and were selected to attend the SASP 2019 JODC.

Jordan Walton WI, Annie Unsell AL, Bailey Lueders MO, Julia Kassa AZ, Sydnie Gray MI, Natalie Unsell AL, Jacob Pruitt OH, Ethan Jardines VA, Robert Little TX, Sawyer Phipps TN, Zachary Winton TX, and Maccoy Gilkison VA.

We also had SASP coaches and SASP staff participate in an international discipline coach’s clinic on May 22 and 23 before helping coach the SASP athletes upon their arrival.  Russell Gilkison VA, Samantha Engle MI were the coaches that participated in the coach program.

SASP is excited to watch as these athletes continue to participate in the International disciplines with hopes of one day seeing one of them standing on the podium and the American Flag is raised as they represent our county in international competition.

We look forward to again holding a JODC in 2020.

Apply for August Junior Olympic Development Camp by June 20

SCTP is planning its second Junior Olympic Development Camp of the year in conjunction with USA Shooting to help USAS identify SCTP athletes who may have the potential to become USA Shooting team members. The camp will be held August 12-16 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Both athletes and coaches participate in the Junior Olympic Development Camps. Athletes learn about the international shooting disciplines, engage in a little friendly competition, and enjoy rubbing elbows with Olympic athletes and coaches while living for a few days at the Olympic Training Center. Coaches gain the experience they need to train athletes in the international disciplines. Deadline to apply for the August camp is June 20. SCTP Junior Olympic Development Camp Is a Hit

SCTP has just completed its second Junior Olympic Development Camp of the year at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The camps are held in conjunction with USA Shooting to help USAS identify SCTP athletes who may have the potential to become USA Shooting team members. Both athletes and coaches participate in the Junior Olympic Development Camps. Athletes learn about the international shooting disciplines, engage in a little friendly competition, and enjoy rubbing elbows with Olympic athletes and coaches while living for a few days at the Olympic Training Center. Coaches gain the experience they need to train athletes in the international disciplines. Athletes, coaches, and parents have nothing but glowing reviews of the camps:
    "I can’t say enough about how great this last week was. It really did exceed my expectations from every angle. I learned a bunch about my personal coaching style, about how to motivate these kids and how to 'fill the hopper' for USA Shooting. I doubt I’d be able to even say the one thing that was best about this week." SPP Hosts First Junior Olympic Development Camp

SPP Junior Olympic Development Camp Seven SPP athletes and four coaches participated in Scholastic Pistol Program's first-ever Junior Olympic Development Camp last week, July 2-6, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Shooters and coaches came from teams in Michigan, Arizona, Illinois, and Florida. SPP is the official feeder program to USA Shooting's Sport Pistol and Rapid Fire Pistol programs. Those in attendance were able to spend time in the classroom and on the range with our coach, Russ Doucette, and Olympic athletes Teresa (Meyer) Chambers, Keith Sanderson, and Kerry Morris. "We appreciate the help and support of the OTC staff and athletes who provided us with help and support throughout the camp," said Tammy Mowry, SPP Program Manager. "We're excited that our athletes and coaches were able to learn more about USA Shooting's pistol disciplines. This was an outstanding event, and we're already looking forward to the next one."

2014 USA Shooting Wisconsin Junior Olympic Championship

Wisconsin’s first USA Shooting Junior Olympic Championships came to a close last Sunday afternoon, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Wisconsin shooting sports. Thirty young athletes aged 20 and under, including 23 males and seven ladies, traveled from four states -- one all the way from New Mexico -- to be part of the inaugural event. The event was run concurrently with SCTP's Wisconsin State International Championships. In addition, on Saturday there were 250 athletes from throughout the Midwest who competed in the 100-target SCTP Midwest High School Regional tournament on the American trap fields. Results of the SCTP awards for both tournaments can be found on the SCTP website under "Results." On Saturday afternoon, there was a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting for the new Olympic bunker. Nearly 400 people were in attendance for the grand opening, including WTA, NRA, SCTP, and DNR representatives. Outdoor Wisconsin TV host Dan Small and his crew filmed the event for a future show. The young athletes shot a series of five qualifying rounds totaling 125 targets over two days in the same format that is used every four years in the Olympics. The weather conditions were less than ideal though most of the weekend, with high winds, rain, and eventually lightning that stopped the event for an hour on Saturday afternoon. High winds made Sunday morning’s rounds very challenging. These conditions made the course even more difficult for the Olympic hopefuls.

After the qualifications were complete, the top six male and female shooters continued to the finals, where they shot additional targets to determine the final medal winners. Myles Walker of Elkhorn took home the men’s gold medal after the two-day event. Other finalists included Jordan Hintz and Christian Jensen of Burlington, Jack Schuppie and Josh Nelson of Richfield, and Aaren Weinke of Baraboo. Hintz took second place silver, and Jensen won the bronze over Schuppie in a shoot-off to end the event.

For the ladies, Meredith Berneau of Waterford won the gold ahead of Abby Rosenau of Ripon and her sister Madelynn. Other finalists were Mariah Kerr from Burlington and Alexandria Zigelbauer of Iron Ridge. Non-resident medals, gold through bronze, went to Oscar Southbloom of Minnesota, Anna Pfaff of Illinois, and Kes Luchini of New Mexico, respectively. All 30 athletes who competed in this event now have the opportunity to compete at the USA Shooting Junior Olympic Championships set for July 8-13 in Colorado Springs, CO, where they will contend for positions on the USAS Junior team and the opportunity to potentially represent the U.S. in international competition. The weekend started off with a coach, parent, and adult fundraising event Friday afternoon on the Olympic bunker. The “50 for $50.00” fundraiser was won by Bruce Nelson of the Daniel Boone Conservation League, and the proceeds will sponsor a Wisconsin SCTP Athlete to attend an SCTP Junior Olympic Development Camp in Colorado Springs in August. Wisconsin Bunker Trap The world-class International-Style Olympic Bunker featuring 15 trap machines in one 60-foot long trench controlled by an automated computer system was made possible with generous grants from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Pittman-Robertson Fund and the National Rifle Association (NRA). This bunker is the first of its kind in the state. The 280-acre WTA Shooting and Learning Complex in Nekoosa, WI includes American Trap and Olympic-style trapshooting, as well as a premier campground. The new Homegrounds RV Park should be open by mid-June and features 104 pull-through sites with full hook-up. SPP Plans Its First Junior Olympic Development Camp

Join us for the first-ever SPP Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) to be held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO, July 2-6. 

Classes will be held for both Athletes and Coaches.

Registration fee for both Athletes and Coaches is $200, which includes class materials and room and board at the Olympic Training Center (OTC). Due to scheduling and commitments, there will be no refunds 30 days or less before the camp occurs. Participants are responsible for travel to and from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Space is filling quickly.  The deadline to apply for the camp is May 26.
