2018 SASP Midwest Regionals

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) held a Midwest Regional match May 18-20, 2018, at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL. Despite the wet conditions leading up to the weekend, which made for a great setting for a lone bullfrog spotted on the bays, the match was completed with enthusiasm by the athletes.  Intermittent rain and a lightning delay did not dampen the spirits of the teams. Seven states including Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa, Tennessee and Wisconsin, were represented.  There were 76 athletes and a total of 162 entries competing in the five disciplines.  Athletes in rookie, intermediate, senior and collegiate divisions participated in the match. Top teams included Steel Shooters of Traer (IA) in intermediate rimfire pistol, non-collegiate open 1911, collegiate open 1911, intermediate optic rifle and intermediate iron rifle; Bluegrass Sportsmen’s League Steel Cats (KY) in non-collegiate open rimfire pistol; Hoosier Daddy Rifle & Pistol (IN) in collegiate open centerfire and non-collegiate open iron rifle;  Arnold Junior Shooter (MO) in senior centerfire; Union Grove (WI) in non-collegiate open centerfire and senior 1911; Ozaukee Scholastic Shooting Sports (WI) in senior iron rifle and senior optics rifle; McKenzie Shooting Sports (TN) in rookie optic rifle and non-collegiate open iron rifle.

2018 SASP College Nationals

How did you spend your spring break?  Well 112 college athletes spent theirs competing for SASP National Titles in Alabama. On March 10 & 11 the Scholastic Action Shooting Program held our College National Championships at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Talladega Marksmanship Park in Talladega, AL.  We thank GLOCK for sponsoring our use of the Marksmanship Park and CMP for their great southern hospitality.  This year was the largest championship in SASP’s history, with 16 teams, 112 athletes and 201 entries.  That is a 100% increase in teams, 44% increase in athletes and 121% increase in entries over the 2017 championships. Congratulations to all the teams that participated with many competing in their very first national championships.  This year the results were very close with many places being decided by just a few seconds and some by less than a second. In the Rimfire Discipline the University of Vermont took first, followed by Michigan State University in second and Texas A&M finishing third.  In Centerfire Texas A&M repeated as National Champions and also took second, with West Point coming in third. In Optic Rifle the University of Vermont took first and third with Florida State University finishing second. In Iron Rifle University of Arizona won the championship by less than 5 seconds at their first nationals with Florida State University taking second and Clemson University taking third. In the 1911 discipline Michigan State University won the national championship, with Florida State taking second and Miami University of Ohio taking third in their first trip to the national championship. In the Open Division, Rimfire Bethel University won the National Championship by beating second place Clemson University by just 1.66 seconds, with Bob Jones University finishing third.  In Centerfire Lake Country Action Shooters and Bob Jones University shared the title with Texas A&M taking second and the University of Florida taking third.  In Optic rifle Concordia University Wisconsin competing in their first SASP took the championship beating second place University of Wisconsin Platteville by just .98 of a second, and Lake Country Action Shooters came in third.  Iron Rifle the University of Wisconsin Platteville took the title beating their in-state rival Concordia University of Wisconsin who took second, with Bethel University taking third.  In 1911 Lake Country Action Shooters took first and Concordia University of Wisconsin took second. Scholastic Action Shooting Program Introduces New Stages of Fire

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is introducing two new stages that can be substituted for Focus and Speed Trap at matches starting this 2018 competition season. “Over the past couple years, athletes and coaches have expressed an interest in adding new stages to continue to challenge youth athletes,” stated Rick Leach, SASP Interim National Director. “SASP staff listened to these requests and two new stages have been designed and tested.” The first new stage the “M” was trialed at the National Championships at the Cardinal Center in Ohio in July on a side match.  Following Nationals, SASP staff members Dave Richman and Bill Perkins fine-tuned the stages and finalized the design. “Our original plan was to only introduce one stage a year for each of the next four years, but with urging from coaches the substitute stage for Speed Trap is being released a year early,” Leach said. Speed trap is currently the longest stage at 75 feet to the furthest target. Coaches requested a shorter version since some of their practice ranges are not deep enough to shoot that distance.  So, the “Exclamation.,” like the “M" was designed using the same targets and stop plate location as the stage they are a substitute for, but the furthest target is now only 48 feet instead of 75. An added challenge to the new stages is that all past stages have had all the targets at the same height.  Both new stages challenge the athletes to learn a new skill set by transitioning between targets of different heights. SASP Founding Partner Action Target will soon have an SASP upgrade package available that will include the three new uprights and bases to be able to shoot the new stages, for teams who have previously purchased the Action Target SASP target set. SASP thanks their Founding Partners GLOCK, Smith & Wesson, Action Target and the NRA as well as all SASP’s other sponsors for their continued support of their youth development program.  SASP teaches athletes life lessons through safe firearms handling and competitive shooting.  If you would like more information about starting a SASP team in your area contact Leach at rleach@sssfonline.com .
