2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program Nationals Registration on Pace to Set Records

The month of June is a peak time for Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team activity across the country, and if the first day of registration for the SCTP National Championships is any indicator, there will be record crowds again in Ohio for the July culminating event. Registration for SCTP Nationals opened June 1 and in the first 24 hours of open registration for the July 8-15 National Championships, 132 teams from 23 different states registered over 2,000 athletes. Combined registrations in all SCTP events totaled 4,396 compared to 3,804 for the first 24 hours of tournament registration one year ago. An additional 70-80 SCTP teams are expected to register prior to the July 5 deadline. “These numbers are absolutely incredible!” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director. “We had almost as many athletes and registrations in one day this year as we had in total at last year’s National Championships! People are excited about this year’s tournament for sure!” The 2017 event at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio, is on track to outpace the 2016 SCTP National event, which finished with 2,176 athletes and 4,576 event entries. While the numbers are already up significantly from last year’s registrations, Wondrash points out that there is still room at the spacious Cardinal Center.  “There are many times and dates still available for this year’s National Championships. We encourage teams to join us in July to continue the fun throughout the summer!” The Scholastic Action Shooting Program will also hold its National Junior/Senior Championships in conjunction with the SCTP tournament. SASP Nationals registration opened on May 18 and currently has 342 athletes from 32 teams across 13 states registered to shoot. SASP registrations currently total 642 already out-pacing the 542 total entries from 2016. Teams may register for the SASP National Championships through July 5.  The 1911 division first being offered at Nationals already has 62 entries About the National Championships The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) 2017 National Championships will take place near Marengo, Ohio, at the Cardinal Shooting Center July 8-15. The eight-day event is expected to draw around 2,500 youth from over 30 states. Over one million shots will be fired during the event with around $16 million generated in economic impact. Participating teams are organized and coached by certified volunteer leaders and have participated in their SCTP/SASP state championship event. SASP to Offer Centerfire 1911 Division at Nationals

The SASP is pleased to announce it will be adding a centerfire 1911 division at Nationals.  Participants must first shoot either their regular rimfire or centerfire pistol division. So, in other words you may not only shoot 1911 and rifle.  Using the stock service pistol rules ensures the centerfire division remains a truly a level playing field. The SASP want to continue to be a sport where an athlete can purchase a stock firearm and compete on a level playing field without having to buy an expensive custom firearm. Because it is an additional gun division and you still must shoot your current rimfire or centerfire division, shooting a centerfire 1911 will not force the athlete to move up to centerfire if he or she still wants to compete in the rimfire division.  This will give those athletes exploring the move up to the centerfire division a chance to try it without having to stay in centerfire if they do not feel comfortable there. At Nationals, the 1911 division will have medals, trophies and Midway USA Foundation endowment funds just like the other divisions. So, what are the rules?
  1. Must register and compete in rimfire or the centerfire division before you can compete in the 1911 division.
  2. Any centerfire caliber 1911/2011 .45 or smaller.  Minimum power factor of 125.
  3. A safe operational firearm, and all safeties must be operational.
  4. Firearm may not be compensated.
  5. Iron sights only, No Optics.
  6. Maximum 10 rounds in magazine as it is in our other divisions.
If this division is successful at Nationals, the SASP will discuss adding it to the program with state advisors and rules committee for future inclusion at state, regional and local matches once the National Championships has concluded. Please reach out to Rick Leach, rleach@sssfonline.com, with questions.

2017 NSSF Boy Scout Grant Program Goes Live

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has announced the launch of its annual grants partnership with the Boy Scouts of America Councils. Through this partnership, BSA Councils can receive a portion of $100,000 in NSSF-provided grant funds to develop or expand their troop activities in target shooting and marksmanship. Target shooting programs continue to rank among Scouting’s most popular activities, teaching firearms and range safety, teamwork building and fundraising skills. This seventh year of supporting the BSA Council Grant Program in this manner brings with it a new level of excitement. Safety and marksmanship training through the Boy Scouts is a time-honored introduction to the shooting sports. With recreational shooters and hunters alike realizing they’re living in an era of renewed enthusiasm for their sports, we’re looking forward to increased participation from Scouts pursuing badges in these activities and then taking those new skills afield for a lifetime of enjoyment. BSA Councils wishing to apply for grants should visit the grant guidelines and application procedures at nssf.org/bsagrant. Councils awarded funds through NSSF’s BSA Grant Program must use those grants to purchase of equipment and supplies for their shooting sports activities from an NSSF Member Retailer. The full list of these retailers is available at nssf.org/retailers/find. Examples of qualifying purchases are ammunition, eye and ear protection, firearms, targets and shooting vests. For more information on this special program and qualifications, contact me at zsnow@nssf.org or 203-426-1320 ext. 224.

Safety Officers Needed for SASP National Championships

July will be here before we know it and we’ll all be traveling to Ohio for the National Championships being held at the Cardinal Center in Marengo.  We are looking for help with getting Safety Officers for the match.  The National Championships will take place July 8-15 and we will have two flights of shooters going out each day except for July 16, where we will have just one flight of shooters going out since that is the last day. If you’re a coach of one of our SASP teams or have been a Safety Officer (SO) or Range Officer (RO) for our matches or IDPA or USPSA matches, and would like to help us out by donating half day or more for the athletes, please contact Rick Leach (rleach@sssfonline.com) or Tammy Mowry (tmowry@sssfonline.com).  We would greatly appreciate your help.
