TSRAF Announces SASP Texas Youth Shooting Competitive Match Series

stx-shooters-photo-2016-1The TSRA Foundation is proud to announce The Texas Youth Action Shootout match series for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 competitive season. In close cooperation with the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP), a program of the San Antonio based Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), The Texas Youth Action Shootout will host youths age 12 through college age with a safe and team-based competitive environment. The series will conclude with a State Championship event in May 2017. SASP is the leading organization in the United States for organized youth action shooting events. Certified volunteer coaches and individual shooters are trained in safe gun handling and competition-oriented shooting skills thru the assistance of the SASP organization. Youth teams are comprised of four shooters using rimfire handguns and rifles, or centerfire handguns in which they engage multiple steel targets from a stationary position. Scores are based on the participants’ time and marksmanship skills. As SASP action shooting continues to grow nationwide, the TSRAF intends for the Texas match series to produce teams that will lead the nation in performance, character and safety. Each of the series matches will prepare our Texas youth shooters to compete at the SASP National Championship match held each July in conjunction with the SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championship.
“The Scholastic Action Shooting Program is pleased to be able partner with the Texas State Rifle Association Foundation. Texas is one of our leading states for SASP program membership and we believe we will be able to introduce many more youth to our great sport. We look forward to the opportunity to work together to promote our programs and reach out to the youth of Texas,” stated Tammy Mowry, National Director, Scholastic Action Shooting Program.
The TSRA Foundation is very proud to have the support of the SSSF/SASP organization and the support of the Texas based coaches and volunteers currently competing in SASP. Texas currently ranks second in the United States in number of registered SASP participants, and with the launch of this match series the TSRA Foundation expects to increase that number exponentially as it pursues its organizational goals of providing quality youth shooting opportunities in Texas for Texas youth.

No storms, no hail and lots of sunshine prevailed for the SCTP’s International National Championships during which four spots on the USA National Junior Team were awarded. The team welcomed two new faces, Wyatt Pursell (KS) and Josh Nelson (WI), who earned their spots in Skeet and Bunker Trap respectively, while Ryne Barfield (GA) and Aaron Wilson (KS) also renewed their spots on the team. Hank Garvey Jr’s position in Double Trap was uncontested, a spot that he secured earlier in the year. With 30 teams from across the country representing 16 states and 101 athletes, Wisconsin lead the pack with 23 individual athletes in attendance. The event ran smoothly and was finished off with an awards banquet held at the Double Tree resort also located in Colorado Springs. The Championship event was immediately followed by a Junior Olympic Development Camp. Top athletes and coaches from around the country attended the week-long camp to learn the fundamentals of International shooting and coaching. Camp coaches in attendance were taught by some of the best in the country, including Terri DeWitt (lead coach), Connie Smotek, Joe Buffa and the legendary Lloyd Woodhouse, along with several summer resident athletes. “What a great opportunity for these aspiring Olympic athletes and coaches,” Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director, said. “Both the National Championships and the JODC are fantastic events supported not only by USA Shooting, but many Industry partners as well.” The 35 athletes and 14 coaches in attendance all stayed at the Olympic Training Center for the duration of the camp, a time that will be long remembered by all of them. Special thanks to USA shooting’s Bob Mitchell and Sharee Waldron for their help and support of the SCTP’s events held there this past summer. We wish Bob the best in his retirement and sincerely thank him for his past work! The SCTP is the official feeder program to USA Shooting, hosting several Junior Olympic Development Camps each year for its registered athletes and coaches. NSSA/SSSF Unique Opportunity to Support Youth Shooting

Sale Charles Gates’ Krieghoff shotgun to benefit youth shooting sports.
Sale Charles Gates’ Krieghoff shotgun to benefit youth shooting sports.
Two years ago, National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) member Charles Gates died leaving a wonderful legacy gift in his estate. Unbeknownst to either organization at the time, Mr. Gates had structured his estate to donate his prized Krieghoff shotgun collection to be sold and the proceeds to specifically support the youth shooting initiatives of both the NSSA and the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF). While his estate benefited from the tax advantages of planned giving, his thoughtfulness also enabled him to further his passion to support youth shooting long after his passing. At this time, one gun from Mr. Gates’ 10-gun collection remains to be sold. This is a highly engraved K-20 Majestic Grade, Serial #001149, with gold lions, engraved by renowned Krieghoff engraver Kathrin Nonn. It is a 20 gauge with 30” barrels, a #5 skeet stock and Schnable forearm. The selling price is $40,000.00 and pictures of the gun engraving pattern and Ms. Nonn can be viewed at Alamo Sporting Arms web site at www.alamosportingarms.com. This beautiful gun will also be on display during the upcoming World Skeet Championships and Sporting Clays Nationals at Alamo Sporting Arms at the NSC in San Antonio. Any questions about this K-20 maybe be directed to Pam Young at Alamo Sporting Arms at pam@alamosportingarms.com. Louise Terry, SSSF Board Chairman and NSSA Past President comments: “This is a unique chance to own a special masterpiece while supporting the youth shooting programs of both SSSF’s SCTP program and the NSSA.  Both SSSF and NSSA are committed to teaching our young adults the attributes of good fellowship, good sportsmanship, and firearm safety thru our shotgun sports while reinforcing strong American family values. It is also a wonderful example of the power of planned giving which can benefit your personal estate as well as charitable 501©(3) organizations like SSSF and NSSA.” For more information on planned giving and other ways to give, please feel free to contact SSSF BOD member, Mark Wade at mwade@sssfonline.com  or SSSF Executive Director, Ben Berka, at bberka@sssfonline.com. Thank you for helping us introduce and encourage many young adults who otherwise would not have a chance to know and enjoy these shooting sports we love.

High Plains Drifters Win 2nd Place for Float in Colorado Parade

IMG_0364The High Plains Drifters were thrilled to win 2nd place for the float they entered in the Strasburg Hometown Days parade in Strasburg, Colorado. "We wanted to attract some new shooters for the team and we figured a unique and successfully way to do that would be to enter a float in the parade," Tim Wolfe, coach for the High Plains Drifters, said. "We wanted something out of the ordinary to show the public that there are young kids out there being responsible with guns and that they can create a positive team atmosphere around shooting activities. We came up with the concept of a skeet field because it would be very visual and would leave no doubt what one of the disciplines our youth shoot." More than 15 people worked on creating and building the float. During the parade, kids handed out candy, flyers and miniature frisbee's ( looked like clays) with the team name on it. "We received a multitude of compliments and comments on how wonderful it was to see the young kids be involved in such a great concept," Wolfe said. "At the judging stand we even got a standing ovation from a large number of people." The float won 2nd place and was shown in two newspapers that reach the eastern section of Colorado.
