Two Ways to Support the Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Pistol Program This Holiday Season

SSSF-Logo-(Revised)If the holiday season is bringing out your generous side, then please consider one of two ways to support the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) this season. #GivingTuesday The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) has joined many other nonprofit organizations in the fundraising campaign #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday is held each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to jump start the holiday season and as a way to encourage people to give back to their communities and to the organizations and causes they believe in. “This is the first year the SSSF has participated in #GivingTuesday,” Ben Berka, SSSF president and executive director, said. “We encourage those of you who want to show support for our youth shooting sports programs to donate to the SCTP and the SPP on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015. Your donations help fund our programs, which enhance the growth and personal development of student athletes throughout the nation.” Those interested in donating to the SSSF may go to https://sssfonline.org/donate/ to view giving options and make a secure, online donation. The SSSF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Contributions are tax-deductible. AmazonSmile With the holiday shopping season upon us, many of you will no doubt be shopping on Amazon.com, the website where you can buy everything from books and music, to electronics, to automobile tires. Without spending another cent, you can support the SCTP and SPP with your Amazon purchases. Tammy Mowry
Tammy Mowry
The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) welcome Tammy Mowry and Rick Leach to their new positions with the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP). Mowry is being promoted to the role of national director for the SPP and Leach is joining the SPP program staff as director of development. Ben Berka, SSSF president and executive director, said, “The passion and working knowledge Tammy and Rick bring to the Scholastic Pistol Program and our extended family of state advisers, volunteer coaches, athletes and partners will be a tremendous asset.” Mowry has served as SPP program manager since the program started in 2012 and has been instrumental in the creation and development of the program.  Prior to joining SSSF, Mowry worked as sponsor coordinator with the Steel Challenge Shooting Association and held several leadership positions with the National Wild Turkey Federation. Mowry said, “Having been with the Scholastic Pistol Program since its inception in 2012, I’m looking forward to the opportunity and challenges that will be presented in continuing to grow the SPP and believe we have a great team in place to do this.”
Rick Leach
Rick Leach
The new SPP director of development, Leach, is no stranger to the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and SPP as he has been involved as a volunteer and coach with the SCTP since 2011 before starting a SPP program in 2012.  Leach has been serving as the SPP volunteer state advisor in Wisconsin and has served a key role in growing Wisconsin into one of the largest SPP member-states in the country.  Professionally, Leach comes from a 29-year law enforcement career, most recently as a sergeant with the Cedarburg Police Department since 2000. “I am truly honored for this opportunity to help the SSSF continue their great work and help grow their programs,” Leach said.  “Our volunteer coaches and parent volunteers are making positive changes in the lives of the athletes they work with.  I look forward to working with the athletes and coaches in the future.”

Congratulations to Dan Skelton, winner of a new SKB IS300 semi-auto 12-gauge shotgun. Skelton’s email was selected in a random drawing after he participated in a survey on the economic impact of the Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Pistol Program National Championships, conducted last July. “I was so excited to get the email that I had won the SKB shotgun from filling out the economic impact survey after Nationals this year,” Skelton said. “What a great surprise!  I know how important it is to give feedback and try to save the World Shooting Complex, and winning the gun was an exciting bonus.” Skelton’s sons, Nick and Jake, both shoot for Ozaukee Scholastic Sports (OSS) in southeast Wisconsin. They shoot all disciplines, including pistol, skeet, sporting clays and trap.  Skelton, along with Carrie Scheel (club president) started OSS six years ago to support their sons who were interested in shooting. Skelton currently sits on the board as the vice president. “Nothing like this existed in our area and we wanted our local youth to have the opportunity to earn a varsity letter in shooting sports, giving them the chance to experience something outside of the usual high school athletics,” Skelton said. He said shooting sports has been a positive experience for his entire family. “It has given the boys valuable life lessons in determination, team work, goal-setting and allowed them to experience both team and individual success.  We have met some wonderful people along the way who made a real impact on our kids; even inspiring our oldest son to become a police officer, as several of his coaches worked in the public service field and the military.  Shooting sports will be a lifelong hobby that we can do together as a family and for that I will always be grateful.”

New Hampshire SPP State Championship Match Held November 14, 2015

Youth Scholastic Pistol Program teams from Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire showed up for what would probably be their last match of the year before winter takes hold. This was the second annual state championship held at Pioneer Sportsmen's Club in Dunbarton, NH, for the SPP. Despite an unusually warm week, everyone was worried when the match started out with snowflakes. The snow quickly disappeared and stayed away, but the cold and wind did not. The good news is, everyone was dressed appropriately. There were many squads represented in eight divisions with the most competition in the college divisions. The match went quickly thanks to the professionalism of the Pioneer volunteers who are experienced at running monthly steel shoots. Scores were processed quickly thanks to Paula Nash. There was no standing around after the match as the youth all pitched in to help the staff take down the stages and canopies to prepare the facility for winter. Several shooters and coaches commented on what a well run match it was. Club president Lisa Van Biene was very impressed with the speed that all the shooters demonstrated as they competed for the best combined score. Pioneer would like to continue the tradition of hosting the state match next year and plans to schedule it in October 2016. Match director Andy Nash commented that Pioneer has the facility, staff, and equipment to handle many more teams next year.

SCTP Banquet Live Auction Item Turns Into Successful Hunt

Sam Novak shows off his great deer!
Courtesy of an extremely generous donation from Wilderness Whitetails, America’s premier whitetail outfitter located in central Wisconsin near Stevens Point, a young hunter by the name of Sam Novak bagged his very first trophy buck. He made a great 125-yard shot on a 202-inch-class whitetail, a buck that would make the most seasoned deer hunter green with envy. “Great experience!” said Novak, a 16-year-old from Bethesda, Maryland. “Great people, really nice lodge…I would love to do it again, this was better than I thought it could ever be!” Novak, of course, was talking about the hunt, the facility and the guides that helped him with this opportunity of a lifetime.

The hunt, donated by Shorty and Greg Flees, owners of Wilderness Whitetails, was auctioned off and won last March at a SCTP Fund Raising Banquet held in southeastern Wisconsin. The banquet is set up to raise funds for the SCTP’s Scholarship program providing much needed funding to SCTP athletes graduating from high school and continuing their education. More than $60,000 was given away to qualified SCTP senior athletes last year alone as a result of these banquets. The “high bidder” of the hunt happened to be Denis Karnosky, Novak’s grandfather and a member of the SSSF’s board of directors and executive committee. Denis had every intention of bringing his grandson on the hunt when he won it and had been looking forward to it since last March. “What a great time, I’m definitely coming back,” Karnosky said after the hunt and pictures were taken. Denis himself had also partaken in the hunting experience taking a fantastic 220-inch+ Wisconsin whitetail.

“Patronizing our sponsors is a good thing,” Tom Wondrash, the SCTP’s national director, said. “This is one of the most sought-after hunts at this banquet, and I want to sincerely thank Wilderness Whitetails for making it possible.” Wondrash booked the hunt along with Karnosky and Novak during Wisconsin’s peak rut season of early November and also took a beautiful 195-inch class trophy whitetail with a drop tine. Anyone interested in donating items for SCTP Fundraising banquets can contact Wondrash at twondrash@sssfonline.com or call him at 262-939-6664. Funds raised go toward the SCTP’s scholarship program for graduating seniors. If you are interested in a 5 star Whitetail “Hunt of a lifetime” at one of the best facilities in the country and hunting the biggest bucks in the world, please contact Shorty Flees or Greg Flees at 715-572-5334 or visit their website at http://www.wildernesswhitetails.com/ I’m sure they will get you in…….You will be happy you did!
